QuestionAnswer
What is mercantilism? Economic system in which a mother country gets raw materials from its colony and then makes goods to sell back to its colonies.
Who controlled most of Africa in 1914? European countries like Great Britain, France, Germany, Italy...
Why did the European countries want colonies? To get raw materials and cheap labor; also land & power; They also wanted to civilize or spread European culture to people in Africa
How did the European countries treat their colonies? As inferior, used them to make money
How did Gandhi fight against the British Rule in India? Non violent resistance using boycotts (refusing to buy British cloth), made his own salt, speeched, marches all without violence
What area was the Balkans? Eastern Europe areas of Austria-Hungry, Serbia, Bosnia pre WWI.
Why were the Balkans a powder keg? It was largely controlled by Austria-Hungry but many different ethnic groups lived there and each group wanted to rule themselves.
What is an Alliance? An agreement between countries to help each other out in a war.
What were the MAIN causes of WWI? Militarism, Alliances, Imperialism, Nationalism
How did WWI go from a war between just two countries to a world wide war? The allanice system drug many countries into the war.
What new technology made WWI very deadly? Machine guns, flame throwers, tanks, better artillery, airplanes, grenades, 75 types of poison gas
Where was most of WWI fought? What was the result? In the trenches in France--as a result France was devastated after the war.
Who took the war blame in the Treaty of Versailles? Germany took the blame, lost land, and had to pay $32 billion, limits put on military
How did the Treaty of Versailles lead to WWII? Germans mad and wanted revenge so Hitler was able to come to power to make Germany's great comeback
What happened to the map of Europe after both WWI & WWII? The map changed; new countries added, others were gone, some areas divided up
What is propaganda? News & ads designed to influence peoples's opinions. In WWI & WWII, it was used to get people to support the war.
Why were many colonies hopeful after WWI at the Treaty of Versailles? The colonies were hoping to get their freedom from the mother countries. Some did after WWI; other colonies would get freedom after WWII.
Why did both Great Britain and France appease Hitler by letting him have the Sudenland and later Czechoslovakia? WWI was just over; did not want to fight again.
Why did the Germans support the Nazi Party and Hitler? Promised to make Germany great again and solve their economic problems
In 1935, Germany passed the Nuremberg Laws which took rights away from Jewish people living in Germany because the Nazis were racist toward the Jews; believed they were inferior
What event caused both Great Britain and France to finally declare war on Germany? Germany invaded Poland
What was the Holocaust? The systematic extermination of over 6 million Jews and 6 million others (gypsies, communists, handicapped, people who disagreed with Hitler)
What is Genocide? The mass killing of a group of people
What is Cultural Diffusion? The movement of ideas, people, religion, langauge, etc... from one place to another.
Who was Adolph Hitler? The leader of Nazi Germany during WWII
What is Militarism? Having weapons and believing that was was glorious
What is an ethnic group? People who share a common racial, religious, national, or cultural heritage.
What is Totalitarianism? Complete control over people's lives by the government?
Who were the Axis Powers in WWII? Germany, Japan, & Italy
How did WWII finally end in Japan? Us dropped 2 atomic bombs on Japan
Why did so many people die in WWII (55 Million)? Civilians were targeted--Holocaust, London Blitz, Atomic Bombs, Japanese troops killed Chinese as they expanded
What is Imperialism? Stronger countries having control over weaker countries
What is Nationalism? Having great pride in your country; also wanted to rule yourself
Why did Imperialism cause conflict? European countries fought each other for colonies and the people of the colonies also fought for their independance
What was the "White Men's Burden"? The idea that the Western European countries needed to help and civilze the inferior people in Africa
What was the "Mad Scramble" for Africa? The race between the Western European countries to get colonie in Africa
What is democracy? A government ruled by the people; people have the right to participate in the government
What is a primary source? Item created during that time period--e.g. WWII a book written by Hitler
What is a secondary source? Item created after the time period--e.g. The movie "Pearl Harbor" made in the 1980's about WWII
What is a colony? Area of land under political, economic, or social control of a more powerful country
