| Frontal bones | Articulate w/ parietal; laterally w/sphenoid. Forms anterior-superior surfaces of cranial vault, & contains two sinuses. |
| Occipital bone | Articulates superiorly-anteriorly w/ parietals; anteriorly w temporals; inferiorly w/ atlas vertebra. Forms posterior & inferior part of vault. It has an external occipital protuberance, internal occiptal protuberance, foramen magnum, & two condyles. |
| Parietal bones | rticulates posteriorly w/ occipital, laterally w/ temporal and sphenoid, & medially w/ each other. It forms superior & lateral walls of cranial vault. |
| Temporal bones | Articulates anteriorly w/ sphenoid, posteriorly w/ occipital & medially w/ parietal. It forms part of the lateral & inferior walls of the cranial vault. Divisions of temporal bone: squamous, tympanic, styloid, petrous, mastoid. |
| Ethmoid bone | Has horizontal plate (perforated) & perpendicular plate (helps form nasal septum) and crista galli (serves as as attachment for brain structures). It has 2 lateral labyrinths which form superior & middle nasal conchae, & 2 large & several small sinuses. |
| Sphenoid bone | Has body (2 large sinuses) & sells turcica (protects pituitary), also 2 greater wings, 2 lesser wings, 2 lateral pterygoid plates, 2 medial pterygoid plates. It forms the greater portion of base of cranial vault, & helps form nasal & orbital cavities. |
