Name the 5 large-mammals that have worldwide importance. Where were they domesticated? -sheep,goat,cattle,pig,horse -fertile crescent
Distinguish between herd and barnyard animals. Herd animals are typically large animals like cows. Barnyard are animals that are contained in one place like pig.
What evidence do we rely on to identify individual domesticated animals? ** -increased abundance -size reduction -horns (if animal has them) genetic evidence
What characteristics of individual wild animals made them amenable to domestication? Docility; ability to follow a single leader; won't run away in fear easily, easy reproduction, easy to feed.
Discuss the domestication history of taurine and zebu cattle. Both members of Bovinae family; have same wild ancestor. Taurine domesticated in Fertile Crescent; Zebu in India. Both around same time 9000 BP.
What are water buffalo primarily used for? Used for traction in rice fields. Sometimes also for milk. (Food is of lesser importance)
Distinguish between Arabian/dromedary camel and Bactrian camel. Have different wild ancestors. Arabian domesticated in S.Arabian peninsula and has one hump. Bactrician in eastern portion of central Asia and has 2 humps. 4500 BP domesticated
Primary differences in use of llamas and alpacas. Llamas used for transport but can only have limited weight before they refuse to move. Alpacas are raised primarily for wool.
What has genetic analysis told us about the wild progenitor of the alpaca? Though wild ancestor thought to be the Guanaco; now it is known it is Vicuna.
How many domestication events are suspected for the pig? Why so many? Possibly as many as 9, though definitely know of 2. So many because pigs can easily turn feral and roam to other places.
