| Compact (Dense) Bone | the hard portion of bone that protects spongy bone and provides the firm framework of the bone and the body |
| Endoskeleton | the bony support structure found inside the human body; it accomodates growth |
| Endosteum | a thin membrane of connective tissue that lines the marrow cavity of a bone |
| Periosteum | the thin membrane of connective tissue that covers bones except at articulations |
| Piezoelectric | the quality of bones that allows them to deform slightly and vibrate when electric currents pass through them and to produce minute electric current when deformed or compressed |
| Sesamoid Bone | round bones that often are embedded in tendons and joint capsules |
| Spongy (Cancellous) Bone | the lighter weight portion of bone, which is made up of trabeculae |
| Trabeculae | an irregular meshing of small bony plates that makes up spongy bone, its spaces are filled with red marrow |

| Fissure | a groove or slit between two bones |
| Foramen | an opening or hole in a bone |
| Fossa | a shallow depression in the surface or at the end of a bone |
| Groove | a depression in the bone that holds a blood vessel, nerve, or tendon |
| Meatus | a tunnel or canal found in a bone |
| Notch | an indentation or large groove |
| Sinus | an air cavity within a bone |
| Condyle | a rounded projection at the end of a bone that articulates with other bones to form a joint |
| Head | a rounded projection atop the neck of a bone |
| Facet | a smooth flat surface |
| Process | any prominent bony growth that projects |
| Trochlea | a pulley shaped structure |
| Crest | a ridge on a bone |
| Epicondyle | a projection on a condyle |
| Line | a ridge that is smaller than a crest |
| Spinous Process | a sharp, bony, or slender projection |
| Trochanter | one of two large, bony processes found only on the femur |
| Tuberosity | a large rounded protuberance |
