What are the four theories given to explain gender roles in society? Strength theory, Compatibility theory, economy of effort theory, and expendability theory
What are primary and secondary subsistence activities? Primary – going out and getting the food Secondary – processing of the food, storage, and distribution
What is the definition of marriage given in class? A socially sanctioned sexual and economic union between at least two individuals.
Why is marriage universal (three reasons given)? Gender division?
What percentage of the world’s societies have economic transactions associated with marriage? 75%
What are the four different economic marriage transactions? Bride price, Bride service, Gift exchange, Dowry
What is the universal incest taboo? Who in history is known to have broken it? Cleopatra, European royal families
What are exogamy and endogamy? Exogamy – Outside a specific group Endogamy – Within a specific group
What are cross cousins and parallel cousins? (be prepared to identify each type from a family tree on test). Cross cousins – fathers sisters children or mothers brothers children Parallel cousins – children of same-sex sibling of either parent. (children of the womb)
What are monogamy, polygyny, polyandry, and polygamy? Monogamy – One partner for life, or one partner at a time Polygyny – Multiple women married to a single man Polyandry – Multiple men married to a single woman Polygamy – Marriage that includes more than 2 partners
What are the five different patterns of marital residence? Patrilocal, Matrilocal, Bilocal, Avunculocal, and Neolocal residences.
What are patrilineal and matrilineal descent patterns? Patrilineal – From the fathers side Matrilineal – From the mothers side
What are examples of Unisex Associations? Menstrual Huts
