Pandemic The spread of a deadly disease across an entire country or continent
Reparations Payments for war damages
Collective Security When a group of nations act as one to preserve the peace
Mandate Territories administered by Western powers
Total War A nations entire resources are used for a war effort
Conscription The draft, enforced military service
Propaganda Ideas used to promote a cause or damage an opposing cause
Atrocity Horrible acts against innocent people
Self-Determination The right of people to choose their own government
Armistice An agreement to end fighting
Stalemate Deadlock in which neither side can defeat the other
No man's land Land between opposing trenches
Zeppelin Large gas filled balloons, used to bomb British coastlines.
U-boats German submarines.
Convoy Groups of merchant ships protected by warships.
Ultimatum A final set of demands.
Mobilize To prepare military forces for war.
Neutrality A policy of supporting neither side in a war.
Pacifism Opposition to all war.
Militarism The glorification of the military.
Entente An informal agreement between countries to follow common policies, leads to close military/diplomatic ties.
