What made Mesopotamia a good place to farm? The rivers flooded every year, which refertilized the soil and made it good for planting.
What does the word "Mesopotamia" mean? The land between the rivers
Did the Mesopotamians have a social class system? Yes
What is another name for the nobility? Aristocracy
How many social classes did the Mesopotamians have? Three
What type of home did the aristocracy live in? Two story homes made of mud brick.
Who held the "official" duties and jobs (those in government and religion) Noble/Aristocratic men
What did the women of a noble household do? ran the household (told servants what to do)
Who attended school in ancient Mesopotamia? wealthy boys only
How were girls educated? At home by their mothers.
Who arranged marriages in ancient Mesopotamia? The fathers
What did the nobility do for fun? Had feasts, musicians and dancers and played games like checkers.
Which was the largest of the social classes? The working class (or commoners)
What types of jobs would the commoners have? architects, scribes, merchants, farmers, craftsmen, and fishermen
Did the ancient Mesopotamians (Sumerians/Assyrians) have money? No, they bartered and traded
How were commoner boys educated? By their fathers. They were taught the same trade as their fathers, they had no choice in what they did for work.
Describe the home of the commoner people of ancient Mesopotamia. One room mud brick homes
What were the clothing like for the commoners/working class? Men work kilts and women wore loose-fitting dresses tied at the shoulders. Men would shave their heads while women wore braids.
Who were part of the slave class in Mesopotamia? Slaves were either prisoners of war (POWs) or people sold into slavery by their families to pay off a debt. (Children could be sold into slavery by their fathers).
Were the Mesopotamians pagans? Yes, each city had a patron god/goddess but they had over 3,000 gods/goddesses in all!
Why were priests powerful? Priests knew how to please the gods so everyone listened to them.
What did the Mesopotamians believe their gods were like? The gods were like humans. They had feasts, marriages, children and wars, and emotions.
What are the names of some of the Mesopotamian gods? Enlil, Enki, Ninhursag, Utu and Nana
What is cuneiform? The first writing system created by the Sumerians. The word means "wedge shaped" as that is how the characters were made.
Who was the important ruler of Babylon who made a code of laws? King Hammurabi
What was the name of the set of laws made by Hammurabi? Hammurabi's Code
How did the empire end? City states fought each other over resources (such as water) and that made it easier for Alexander the Great to take over the land in 539 BC/BCE.
What is a lugal? The name of the Mesopotamian ruler. The word means "Big Man" in their landguage.
What is a ziggurat? The main temple in a Mesopotamian city.
What are some achievements of the Mesopotamians? The wheel, cuneiform, the lever, saw, pulley, codes of law, and sun dials.
