How have Moroccans adapted their homes to their environment? They make their homes out of adobe. Refers to a brick made of earth & straw. (pg. 64)
What is "cultural diffusion"? The movement of customs and ideas from one place to another. (pg. 67)
In what two ways did "cultural mixing" occur in North Africa? Through conquest and and trade with diverse nations. (Pg. 67)
What is a "chicotte"? A whip made from Hippo - hide that inflicted great pain and suffering on the Congolese people at the hands of the "Force Publique". (Notes)
What is the name of the indigenous (African) police force that helped King Leopold II commit atrocities in the Belgian Congo? The "Force Publique". (Notes, lecture.)
Cultural diversity is what? A place that has a wide variety of cultures. (Pg. 69)
What is the name of the "strongest bonds West Africans have"? Kinship - a family relationship. (Pg. 71)
What is a nuclear family? The first level of kinship - parent/ child relationships. (Pg. 71)
What level of family commitment comes after the nuclear family? The extended family, consisting of uncles, grandparents, aunts, cousins, and any other family relationship besides the parent/ child relationship. (Pg. 71)
What is a "lineage"? A group of families that may trace their descent back to common ancestor. (Pg. 72)
What is a "clan"? Several lineages together form a "clan". (72)
What cultural items do we get from West Africa? Blues & jazz music. (Pg. 74)
How has living in East Africa effected language? There are over 70 different languages spoken with most people speaking an average of 3 languages. (Pg. 76)
Why is East African culture so unique? It has elements of Arab, Indian, and Asian influences. (Pg. 76)
How did the Swahili culture develop? Arab traders contacted Africans living in East African villages 2,000 years ago; the mix is called "Swahili".
Swahili people are people from ____________ and ______________ descent. Arab & African. (Pg. 76)
Is the Swahili language widespread? Yes! 49 million people worldwide speak it as a first language. (Pg. 76)
What 3 Swahili values are embodied in the Kwanzaa holiday? "umoja", unity; "kuumba", creativity; and "imani", faith. (Pg. 77)
What 2 African nations avoided European colonization? Ethiopia & Liberia.
What African group helped end discriminatory practices in South Africa? The African National Congress. (ANC)
What is the significance of the number "46662"? This was Nelson Mandela's prison inmate number. He was jailed for being a political activism.
How important is South Africa to the economy in Southern Africa? Very important! They produce 2/5's of manufactured goods, 1/2 of all minerals, and 1/5 of the agricultural products for the entire continent!
What is "apartheid"? A system of racial discrimination where separate facilities existed for native Africans and European colonials.
Why is it odd for African mine workers to form strong union bonds? Because usually the family bonds are stronger than any other ties.
The man who was the British Consul to the Congo; reported atrocities by King Leopold II. Roger Casement.
What 2 areas of East Africa have land that can be planted with crops? The Rift Valley & the Ethiopian Highlands.
Who was Tippu Tip? An Arab leader of slavers in the Congo in the late 19th century.
What was the name of the missionary group that came to the Congo to convert the Congolese people? The "White Fathers".
Explain how King Leopold II became the personal owner of the Congo. Leopold agreed to form an alliance (association) to rid the Congo of slavers & bring legitimate business to the area. After that, the Berlin Conference gave him the Congo.
What nation agreed to help King Leopold II if he "got in trouble" in the Congo? France agreed to help financially.
As King Leopold II lost more control over the Congo, what happened to the Force Publique officers? They became more powerful and set themselves up as local kings or gods.
How did the Congo return to African control? In the early 1900's, the reports by Roger Casement & the "White Fathers" ignited world wide calls to take away the Congo. Eventually, King Leopold gave the Congo back to Belgium. In the 1960's, Belgium finally returned the Congo to African control.
What does the word "Kwanzaa" mean? "First".
What does the word "oppressors" mean? "Those who control with unfair force."
What is imperialism? "The policy of extending one nation's power to control other nations.
What is "degradation"? "The process of change from a positive state to a negative state." (Ex: "After the severe flooding, the degradation of the river's banks was horrible.")
Name 3 East African countries. Kenya, Ethiopia, and Tanzania. (Any 3 East African countries will work.)
Name 3 Central African countries. Democratic Republic of Congo, Cameroon, and Uganda. (Any 3 Central African countries will work.)
