How did the Catholic missionaries show genuine zeal for their faith? By their willingness to be martyred for their faith.
Slave trade brought nearly 15 million Africans to North and South America. Where did the majority of them go to work? To Brazil and the Caribbean to work the large estates.
When was the practice of slavery entirely outlawed in all the Americas? 1888
What cash crop did Eliza Pinckney bring to the Carolinas? Indigo
In English North American colonies, why was education considered important? it was important for reading Scripture,learning about God and His will. They taught in a one room school house. One teacher taught all grades. If not parents taught kids at home. Colleges were founded to promote biblical learning and to train ministers.
In French North American colonies, why was education not so important? Catholic church did not encourage Bible reading. Felt it was unnecessary to teach poor people to read or write. Most were simple farmers didn't see a need. Only wealthy got educated and traveled to Europe to attend a university.
What major issue greatly contributed to the Civil War in the United States? Slavery
What did Ponce de Leon name the new land he found in North America? Pascua Florida
Cabeza de Vaca viewed the Indians differently than most Spaniards of his time. How did he view them? As human beings
Why wasn’t Hernando de Soto popular with the Indians? Because he enslaved them and stole their grain reserves. He and his men also passed on European diseases to the Indians.
During the French and Indian War, The Battle on the Plains of Abraham was fought to take control of what city? Quebec
How did a lack of education harm the French settlers? Because they were uneducated, this harmed their ability to govern when they gained their independence.
What was the Durham Report? a report that the earl sent to Britain suggesting that they relax control over Canada

What opened up settlement in both western United States and western Canada? The Transcontinental Railroad and the Canadian Pacific Railroad
In what 6 states did the Spanish finally establish themselves? The southern states of Texas, Nevada
Know where the French and English settled. Be able to name the areas as well as specific states/countries they settled the French explored Canada and settled along the St. Lawrence in Montreal. The English took the land that makes up the eastern coast of the United States with Plymouth, Roanoke and Jamestown being their first settlements.
Know how different groups of settlers treated the Indians
Know the difference between the Pilgrims settlement and the Jamestown settlers Jamestown was not prepared,thought it would be easy, no one wanted to work, did not get along with Indians, didn’t have enough supplies/Pilgrims were organized, had more freedom, set up a legal system, shared with the Indians and taught them the gospel.

How did John Smith help the Jamestown settlers make progress with the settlement? He brought discipline to the group, and told the men to work, or they wouldn’t get to eat.
What was the winter of 1609-10 called? The “starving time”.
Who helped Jamestown to begin recovering after the “starving time”? Acting Governor, Sir Thomas Dale

What is a cash crop? A crop which could be sold for cash or supplies

Name 3 important ways the English settlements differed from French and Spanish settlements. The English colonists came under private investors, not government sponsorship. / The English colonists came to live with their families./ Most English colonists were Protestants.
Who were the Puritans? They settled the Massachusetts Bay Colony because they desired to worship the Lord the way they saw fit. The Puritans were Anglicans who disagreed with certain church practices.
What did the Puritans consider their settlement? A city that is set on a hill, a light shining in darkness
Which of the colonies offered the most religious freedom? ( French, English, or Spanish) English
What was the name of William Bradford’s journal of the pilgrim’s venture to America? History of Plymouth Plantation
By the mid-1700s, how many people were in the English colonies between the Atlantic coast and the Appalachian Mountains? Over one million (*where were these people?)
Why did France lose Canada to England in 1763? As a result of the French and Indian War
What is Congress? The United State’s ( the nation’s) new legislature. After the states accepted the Constitution, they elected men to serve in the new Congress
What is the Constitution? The most important document of U.S. history- it outlines the pattern of government.
What is the Quebec Act? The British protected the French way of life by passing this law that guaranteed they could keep their laws and customs in the French part of Canada
What is the British North American Act? The Act made Canada a self-ruling dominion on July 1, 1867.
