precedent an established practice or act that sets an example.
Separatists/Saints/Pilgrims Members of a religious group who arrived in Clymoth, Massachussetes in 1620. Wanted to separate from the church of England.
town meeting A local meeting where decisions are made, especially in New England.
Pilgrims English settlers seeking religious freedom
puritans Group who wanted to purify the church of England.
immigrant A person who moves from one country to another.
dissenter People or a group who disagreed with an official opinion.
William Bradford Pilgrim leader. Traveled on the Mayflower. Governor of the Plymouth Colony for 30 years. He was responsible for negotiating with the Natives and made a solid, good relationship.
Squanto Helped Pilgrims at Plymouth. Taught them farming,fishing, hunting. Arranged a peace treaty with local chief, Massasoit, which lasted for 50 years.
Charles I King of England who raised taxes during hard economic times. Head of the Church of England and began punishing Puritans because they were dissenters. Gave Puritans a charter to start Massachusetts Bay Colony.
Thomas Hooker Established the colony of Connecticut. Wrote the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut which established religious freedom the first time in the New World. Allowed non-church members voting rights.
Anne Hutchinson Spoke out against John Winthrop. Held prayer meetings in her home. Put on trial and kicked out of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Fled to Rhode Island and helped Roger Williams establish Rhode Island.
John Winthrop Leader of the Puritans. Governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony for over 30 years. Judge in the trial of Anne Hutchinson.
Roger Williams Kicked out of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Bought land from native Americans to begin the colony of Rhode Island Established true freedom of religions
Massasoit "great leader" or chief of the Wampanoag Confederacy made a treaty with the Pilgrims that lasted for 50 years participated in the Harvest Feast
Samoset entered the Pilgrim village and welcomed them "in English" which he had a basket from traders introduced the Pilgrims to Massasoit
Henry VIII Tossed the Catholic Church out of England founded Church of England and made himself head.
