| plebeian | Farmers, tradespeople, and craftworkers |
| patrician | Members of Rome's noble families. They owned large farms and had plebeians work the land. |
| republic | A form of government where citizens choose their leaders |
| representative | A person who is elected by citizens to speak or act for them. |
| Senate | The lawmaking body and most powerful branch of government in ancient Rome's republic |
| tribune | Representatives of the plebeians and the leaders of the citizen assembly |
| consul | One of the two elected officials of the Roman Republic who commanded the army and was a supreme judge. |
| Twelve Tables | A collection of laws which governed all aspects of Roman life, including marriage, trade, and warfare. |
| Punic Wars | A conflict between Rome and Carthage in the 200s B.C., ending in victory for Rome. |
| civil war | A war between groups within one country |
| dictator | Someone who rules with absolute power |
| Pax Romana | A period of peace for the Roman Empire that began with the rule of Augustus in about 27 B.C., and lasted around 200 years |

| Messiah | A leader who would be sent by God to guide the Jewish people and to set up God's rule on Earth |

| apostle | A man chosen by Jesus to help him in his teachings |

| Peter | A fisherman who was one of Jesus' apostles |
| Paul | Follower of Jesus who helped spread Christianity throughout the Roman world |
| Constantine | Roman emperor; chose Constantinople as new Roman capital; encouraged Christianity |
| persecution | A policy of arresting, injuring, or even killing members of a religious, ethnic, or other minority group |
| Eastern Orthodox Christianity | A branch of Christianity that developed in the Byzantine Empire and that does not recognize the pope as its supreme leader |
| Justinian Code | A code of law that dealt with marriage, property rights, slavery, crime, and women's rights |
| Diocletian | A strong general who divided the empire into two parts; an eastern and a western part |
| Justinian | One of the greatest Byzantine emperors who tried to unify the Byzantine Empire by allowing only certain types of Christian beliefs |
