peninsula An area of land nearly surrounded by water
harbor A sheltered place along a coast
polis A city-state in ancient Greece
acropolis A walled hill where people of the city could seek safety during an enemy attack
agora A central area in Greek cities used both as a marketplace and as a meeting place
commodity Something that can be bought and sold
citizen A person who has rights and responsibilities in his or her country or community.
monarchy A government ruled by a king or queen
oligarchy A government in which a small group of the richest and most powerful citizens controlled the decision-making
democracy "rule by the people" Every citizen is allowed to vote on government issues.
epic A long poem that tells the story of a legendary hero or historical figure
Homer One of the most famous Greek poets
historical map Shows information about the past, such as when and where historical events took place
map key Helps you understand the symbols appearing on a map
assembly A lawmaking body of government
jury A group of citizens who hear evidence and make decisions in a court of law
philosophy The search for wisdom and the right way to live
Peloponnesian War A war fought between Athens and Sparta in the 400s B.C., ending in a victory for Sparta
orator A person who is a skilled public speaker and his or her speeches are called orations.
Pericles The leader of Athens around 450 B.C. He saw to it that all citizens could take part in government.
Socrates A teacher who led discussions about ways to live.
Plato A famous teacher who wrote down Socrate's ideas.
Phillip II The Macedonian king
phalanxes A Macedonian battle formation of infantry standing in close ranks with their shields and long spears overlapping each other.
Hellenism A culture that was a blend of Greek ideas and the traditions of Africa and Asia in ancient times.
Alexander A brilliant military leader who defeated the Persian king
Aristotle One of the most famous philosophers of Athens and was Alexander's private teacher.
