hieroglyphics The ancient Egyptian system of writing that used symbols to stand for objects, ideas, or sounds
papyrus A reed plant that grows along the Nile. The reeds were pressed together to form a kind of paper.

Amenhotep I Became pharaoh a in 1546 B.C. he is one of ancient Egypt's great builders. he is known for the temples he had constructed at Karnak and in Nubia
Hatshepsut One of Egypt's few female pharaohs. She is also known for her burial temple, which is one of the most beautiful buildings of ancient Egypt
Akhenaton Formerly Amenhotep IV. He forbade the worship of Amon. He practiced monotheism and encouraged a style of art that realistically represented people.
Ramses II The last strong pharaoh who ruled for 67 years from 1304 B.C. to 1237 B.C.
cataract A steep rapids in a river
social pyramid A triangle-shaped chart that shows the rank of people in its society.
Piye A king of Kush who invaded Egypt. He became the ruler of Egypt and Nubia around 730 B.C.
