Mesopotamia Lesson 2

What is a cuneiform? A system of writing that used wedge-shaped symbols to represent sounds, ideas, and objects; developed in ancient Sumer.
What is a City-State? A self-governing city, often with surrounding land a villages.
What is a Ziggurat? A large temple located in the centers of the ancient Sunerians cities.
What is Polytheism? The belief in many gods and goddesses.
What is the Code of Law? A written set of laws that apply to everyone under a goverment.
Who is Sargon? King of the city-state Kish; united the city-states of Sumer to create an empire.
Who is Hammurabi? King of the Babylonian empire; creator of the Code of Hammurabi, one of the world's longest codes of law.
What is Sumer? A group of ancient city-states in southern Mesopotamia; the earliest civilizations in Mesopotamia.
What is Babylonia? An ancient Mesopotamia empire that extended through the Fertile Crescent in the 1700s B.C.
