QuestionAnswer
What is a Republic? It is a government where officials (representatives) are chosen by the people (public). It is also known as an Indirect Democracy
What was the Senate? It was a group of 300 members that was made up of the upper class at first, and later included plebeians.
Who were the Patricians? They were the wealthy upper class. They inherited their power and social status. They believed their ancestry gave them rights to make laws. They controlled all the important positions in government and made up 10% of the population in Rome.
Who were the Plebeians? They were farmers and merchants (commmon people). They were free citizens with some rights. They could vote but could NOT hold political office and they made up 90% of the population in Rome.
What were the Twelve Tables? (451 BC) They were Rome's 1st written laws. They were carved in stone and hung in the forum (the heart of Rome). All free citizens had a right to the protection of the law. This prevented people from misinterpreting laws to favor their own class.
What were Tribunes? This was an assembly of elected plebeians that protected them from unfair acts of patrician officials.
In the Government of Rome, under the Republic, what were consuls and how many were there? They were like kings and commanded the army and controlled government. There were two of them.
What was the Forum? This was the heart of Rome where the Twelve Tables were hung.
