What is a Republic? A political system in which people elect leaders to govern them.
What is a Senate? A council of rich and powerful Romans who helped run the city.
What is a Forum? A large public square in the center of the city where city affairs and politics were discussed.
What is an Empire? A government that includes many different peoples and lands under a single rule.
Who are the Etruscans? Rome’s powerful and advanced neighbors who ruled Rome until Tarquin the Proud.
Who was Romulus? Roman myth – During a fight with his twin brother Remus, Romulus killed Remus in anger, becoming the first king of “Rome,” which was named after himself.
Who was Remus? Romulus’s twin brother who was killed in a fight.
What are Citizens? People who could take part in government.
Who were the Plebians? The lower class, nicknamed "plebs.” The plebeians included everyone in ancient Rome (except for the patricians) from well-to-do tradesmen all the way down to the very poor.
Who were the Patricians? The upper class - the nobility and wealthy land owners. Patrician means aristocratic.
