Women and Islam

In Arabia women traditionally did not have? property rights or inheritance rights.
Women were viewed as? property themselves of the men they are married to.
The institutionalized low status of woman eventually led to? the killing of infant girls.
what book was the major change for Islamic society? the Qu'ran.
What did this change for women in Islam? they were treated with more dignity, had some legal rights, and and were considered equal before Allah.
If a man divorced his wife what did he have to return to her? Her dowry, which is her money and property from her father brought into the marriage.
What was the primary role of women in islamic society? to be loyal to their husband, and care for their family.
What restrictions did women still have in Islamic society? They were legally less then a man, and they had to be veiled in public.
originally where did the rule of women being covered in public come from. This custom began in Mesopotamia, and Persia. Islam adopted and adapted to it.
What two sects created internal struggle, and civil war? Sunni, and Shia.
Many powers developed, and even though these did not effect Islam directly, what did they do? they cut tax revenues from the central authority at Baghdad.
What distant enemy would defeat Islam in the crusades? The Mongols.
After the fall of Baghdad where did the remaining Muslims flee to? Egypt.
What empire would reunite Egypt, Syria, and Arabia in a new Islamic state, which would last until 1918. The Ottoman Turks.
