When did Mohammad Die? 632 AD or CE
Who was Abu Bakr? He was the first Caliph in the Islamic religion. He was responsible for being the head of state, military commander, chief judge and religious leader.
How was the Islamic Empire ruled? It was ruled as a theocracy, or a government ruled by immediate divine guidance or by officials who are regarded as being divinely guided
What is a caliphite? A term used to describe the Islamic Empire.
What was wrong with the caliph system? It lead to a hereditary rule rather than picking from the best leader. Also the lack of a clear next ruler lead to fighting among the areas.
Who were the first four Caliphs? Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, and Ali.
What happened to Hasan? He stepped down as the Caliph and started the Umayyad Dynasty
Where was the capital of the Umayyad Dynasty? Damascus, while Mecca still remained a spiritual place
What was the main language of the Umayyad Dynasty? Arabic
How far did the Empire Expand at one point? It expanded to north Africa Spain and most of the Middle East
Who did the Empire try to take over numerous times? The Byzantine capital Constantinople
Who was Charles Mantel He was a Frankish leader who stopped the spread of Islam in most of Europe
What happened to the Umayyad Dynasty? It ended up splitting into two major groups: The Shiite's and the Sunni's
What were the differences between the Shiite's and the Sunni's The Shiite's that Ali was the rightful heir to Mohammed empire. The Sunni's believe that Ali was a great man but not the rightful heir to the hereditary line.
When was the Umayyad defeated? It was defeated in all areas except Spain in 750 CE
