How did Japan's geography affect their society and way of life? Since they were surrounded by water and mountains they became merchants and traders. They traded across the ocean from boats.
How did prince Shotoku reform/improve Japan. Name 3 things he did. He built a strong central government, introduced political and religious reforms and he wrote the first book of Japanese history.
How was the Japanese system of hiring officials different from the Chinese system? They didnt have tests. They hired you according to who you knew.
How did the government measure Japan's wealth? They counted the people and the things they owned and then they taxed them according to this.
How did the fujiwara come to power and what happened to the country under their control? They took power from the weak emperors, they then divided the country among nobles.
Give a 2 sentence description of samurai. Samurai were private armys. They had very good fighting techniques.
Who was the shogun and why was he important? The shogun was a commander to all of the emperors military forces so they were important because they controlled the samurai and the armys.
What prevented the Mongol conquest of Japan? Kamikaze storms prevented this. Kamikaze were large storms. They sunk many of the ships and then the Japanese defeated the few soldiers that made it to shore.
Why were shoguns unable to regain conrol of Japan after the Onin War? Because the daimyo refused to give up control.
What were the practices of Zen Buddhism? It taught that self-control was the way to find inner peace. This type of Buddhism used meditation and martial arts.
Describe the role of Japanese women in 2-3 sentences. Japanese women were expected to obey their fathers, husbands, and sons.
