What was a Renaissance man? A well-rounded person who set good examples in society (can do all things)
Who was in control of Milan? Who controlled Florence? Francesco Sforza Cosimo de Medici (Medici family paid for Renaissance)
Who wrote The Prince? What was it about? Niccolo Machiavelli It was centered around how to acquire and keep political power
Define Humanism. They studied grammar, rhetoric, poetry, moral philosophy, and history (The individual person is the most important thing)
What things make up a liberal arts education? History, moral philosophy, eloquence(or rhetoric), letters(grammar and logic), poetry, mathematics, astronomy,music, writing, and speech
What are the three books of the Divine Comedy? Who wrote it? What was it about? Hell, purgatory, and heaven/paradise They were written by an Italian author named Dante They were the stories of the soul's journey to salvation
What was Christine de Pizan's main idea? She argued that women were just as capable as men to learn if they were able to attend the same schools

Give three aspects of Renaissance art. 1) Influenced by the artisitc principles of ancient Greece and Rome 2) Artists wanted to imitate nature in their works/realistic bodies and lighting 3) Human beings became the center of attention and "the measure of all things" (Frescoes)

Name the three leaders of the High Renaissance and one work by each. 1) Leonardo da Vinci- Mona Lisa/ The Last Supper 2) Raphel- School of Arms 3) Michelangelo- ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Rome
What are two things people should know about Northern Renaissance art? 1) Artists of Northern Europe became interested in portraying their world 2) The artists of Northern Europe had a different approach realistically than the Italians because the large wall spaces had given rise to the art of fresco paintings
Name two Northern European artists and one work by each. 1) Jan van Eyck- Giovanni Arnolfini and His Bride 2) Albrecht Durer- Adoration of the Magi
How did Erasmus say the church must be reformed? He wanted to spread the philosophy of Christ, provide education of christianity, and critize the abuses in the church (Did not want to leave the church or start a new one)
What was the "Philosopy of Christ" approach to the reformation? It was meant to show people how to live good lives on a daily basis, rather than provide a system of beliefs that people have to pratice to be saved (Live like Jesus)
Give and example of the problems in the church from In Praise of Folly. "Like you don't tie your shoes a certain way, you are not honoring God."
What was Luther's job? He was a monk and a professor at the University of Wittenberg where he lectured the Bible
What is an indulgence? Release from all or part of the punishment for sin
What did Luther do with his 95 Theses? He sent them to his church supperiors and they were printed and spread to all parts of Germany(Nailed it on the door of his church)(His 95 problems)
How did the Catholic Church deal with Luther? Describe the Edict of Worms? The church excommunicated him in 1521. By the Edict of Worms, Luther was made an outlaw within the empire.
What was the outcome of the Peace of Augsburg? Each prince/governor got to choose their religion (Ends Holy Roman Empire)
How did Luther's actions affect people that eventually came to America? He changed the number and diversity of churches all around the world today (Protestants came to America for religious Freedom)
Why was Zwingli so important? He was a Protestant reformer and allowed the people to read the scriptures
How did Zwingli end up? His enemies killed him, cut up his body, and burned the pieces,scattering the ashes(Fighting for Protestants vs. Catholics)
What was Calvin's Institutes of the Christian Religion about? It was a summary of Protestant thought, which attacked the teachings of the Roman Catholics(How Protestants should worship)
Where was Calvin from? France
Define predestination. Someone's fate or destiny(God knows the future)
Why did Henry VIII want a divorce? His wife, Catherine of Aragon, had not produced a son and he needed a male heir
How did Henry VIII's divorce weaken the Catholic Church? They started the Anglican church and they lost all control of England
What was the Act of Supermacy? It declared that the king was "taken,accepted, and reputed as the only supreme on Earth of the new church of England(Henry VIII was the religious leader and king)
Why was Mary called Bloody Mary? Why didn't she like Protestants? She had more than 300 Protestants burned as heretics. She was against the new acts of Parilment that gave the clergy the right to marry and created a new Protestant church service
List the three most important facts about the Anabaptists. 1) Anybody could preach 2) Adult batpitism 3) Believed in the complete seperation of church and state
What are the three pillars of the Catholic Reformation? The Jesuits(hardcore missionaries), reform of the papacy, and the Council of Trent. The council of Trent reaffirmed traditional Catholic teachings in opposition to Protestant beliefs
What are the three reasons for European Exploration? God- Christianity Gold- Money Glory- Fame for discovery of land
What are three things that Europeans took from Arabs that helped them explore? The compass, caravel,cartography(map making), and the astrolabe
What made Prince Henry the Navigator important? Where was he from? He was the first leader to push exploration. He was from Portugal
What was the first successful European exploring country? Portugal
What was the Line of Demarcation? Who drew it? Who did it affect? What was the treaty called? It was a line drawn by the pope and Portugal took everything to the east, while Spain took everything to the west. Portugal and Spain were both affected and the treaty was called the Treaty of Tordesillas.
In the Americas, where did Cortes, Pizzaro, and the Portuguese take over? Cortes- Mexico (Defeated the Aztecs) Pizzaro- Peruvian Andes Portuguese- Brazil
What was the Columbian Exchange? What were some items that were exchanged? Stuff traded from the old world to the new world(vice versa), such as, tomatoes, horses, guns, tobacco, and corn
What were the Dutch East and Dutch West India companies ? A strong spice trading company (East- Netherlands and West- Caribbean)
Which European countries took over Virginia/Massachusetts, Canada/Louisiana, and New York? Virginia/Massachusetts- England Canada/Lousiana- France New York- The Dutch/Netherlands
What crop led to an influx of slaves from Africa? Sugarcane
Explain triangular trade. What did each port import and export and to and from where? Raw materials were sent from the U.S. to Europe, where manufactured goods were sent to Africa, and slaves were sent from Africa back to the U.S.
Most slaves were ------ from Africa. Most slaves were prisioners of war from Africa.
What religion spread from Northern Africa to the south? Islam
What island nation in the Pacific becomes Muslim by interacting with traders? Indonesia

Why didn't Europe have as big of an impact on mainland Asia as it did on the islands? The countries on the mainland had better governments and military
In Southeast Asia, what were the two main religions on the islands? What was the big religion on the mainland? Islam and Christianity Buddhism
