Feudalism

feudalism Under this system landowning nobles governed and protected the people in return for services.
lord A feudal landowner given his land from the King.
vassal A noble who served a lord of higher rank.
fief The land granted to a vassal.
serf The lowest member of society. Could not leave the manor, own property, or marry without the lord's approval.
manor Consisted of the lord's house or castle, the surrounding fields, and a peasant village.
Dark Ages occurred during the middle ages in Europe when there were many problems like disease and not a lot of important intellectual discoveries were recorded.
clergy Church leaders.
Pope The leader of the Catholic Church.
knight Warriors in armor who fought on horseback.
monastery A place where very religious people live.
guild A business group.
nobility The highest social class.
barter trading something for another thing without using money.
hierarchy A way of ranking or organizing things or people.
chivalry The medieval knight’s code of ideal behavior, including bravery, loyalty and respect for women
noble a member of the highest social class
divine right of kings Kings are answerable to God only
loyalty A commitment to someone or something
monarch king
peasant a farm worker who was either a freeman (paid taxes to a noble to fram) or a serf.
Black Death A terrible plague that killed millions in Europe in the 1300s.
