WEEK 1:
Introduction to Nutrition - Principles and Importance:
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| defining nutrition | provision of nourishment to cells, tissues, organs, systems and the body as a whole |
| core concepts of nutrition | Nutrient balance, Nutrient turnover, Nutrient flux, Metabolic pools and Adaptation to altered nutrient supply |
| nutrient balance equation | intake - output (loss) = change in body stores |
| nutrient turnover | refers to how metabolic substrates are continually being used and replaced to allow for rapid adjustments in metabolic state |
| nutrient flux | measure of activity in metabolic pathway and isnt necessarily related to size of metabolic pools |
| metabolic pool types | functional pool, storage pool, and precursor pool |
| functional pool | direct involvement in body functions |
| storage pool | provides buffering effect eg can be made available to the functional pool when required |
| precursor pool | provides the substrate for nutrient/ metabolite synthesis |
| adaption to altered nutrient supply | energy requirements must be met regardless so the greater the capacity to respond to adverse nutritional states the greater the capacity to survive those states |
