Color tubes uses & additives

Green top Sodium Heparin & lithium heparin For lithium level, use sodium heparin. For ammonia level, use sodium or lithium heparin.
Light blue top Sodium citrate. Coagulation tests (protime and prothrombin time), full draw required.
Purple top Hematology(CBC) and blood Bank (Crossmatch); requires full draw-ivert 8 times to prevent clotting and platelet clumping.
Red top None. Chemistries, Immunology and Serology, Blood Bank (Crossmatch)
Light green top Chemistries
Black top Sodium citrate (buffered) Westergren Sedimentation Rate; requires full draw
Light gray top Glucoses, requires full draw (may cause hemolysis if short draw)
Gold top None. Chemistries, Immunology and Serology
Dark blue top EDTA- Trace element testing (zinc, copper, lead, mercury) and toxicology
Pink top Molecular/viral load testing
Yellow top ACD (acid-citrate-dextrose) HLA tissue typing, paternity testing, DNA studies
Orange top Thrombin STAT serum chemistries
Light brown top Serum lead determination
Yellow-black top Microbiology - aerobes, anaerobes, fungi
