History Basics, Early Humans, Prehistory, and the Neolithic Revolution

TermDefinition
Timeline a line marked off with a series of events and dates.
Chronology a list of events in the order in which they occured.
Calendar a system used to measure time by dividing it into days, weeks, and months, and years.
Period a length of time where a specific set of events happened, also sometimes called an era.
Primary Source information that comes directly from a person who experienced an event.
Secondary Source information about an event that does not come from a person who experienced that event.
Tertiary Source a publication that simply summarizes information from primary and secondary sources.
Anthropology the study of humankind in all aspect, especially development and culture.
Archaeologist the scientific study of ancient culturesthrough the examination of artifacts and other evidence.
Prehistory the time prior to the invention of writing and record keeping.
Fossil hardened remains or imprints of living things long ago.
Geologist a scientist who studies the physical materials of the Earth itself, such as soil and rocks.
Artifact object made by a human being.
Hunter-Gatherer person who lives by hunting animal and gathering plants.
Culture beliefs, customs, practices, and behavior of a particular nation or group of people.
Migration movement of people from one place to another.
Environment the surroundings or conditions in which a person, animal, or plant lives or operates.
Adapt to change to fit new conditions.
Populate to become an inhabitant of a place.
Animism the belief that the natural world including animals, plants, rocks, land, and weather, is full of spirits
Domesticate change the growth of plants or behavior of animals in ways that are useful for humans.
Revolution a complete change in ways of thinking, working or living.
Nomad a person who moves from place to place without a permanent home.
Surplus having more than you need, extra.
Specialization act of concentrating or focusing on a limited number of goods or activities.
Economy a system by which goods and services are produced and distributed.
Civilization a complex society that has cities, a well-organized government, and workers with specialized jobs.
Resource supply of something that can be used as needed.
Religion people's beliefs and practices about the existence, nature, and worship of a god or gods.
Social Class a group of people living in similar economic conditions.
