Body Planes and Orientations
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Supine | lying flat on back, with face/chest facing upward |
| Prone | lying flat on your stomach, with face/chest facing downward |
| Contralateral Control | control or movement involving the OPPOSITE side of the body. Example: Right brain hemisphere controlling left side of body. |
| Ipsilateral | control or movement involving the SAME side of the body. Example: The left brain hemisphere controlling the left side of the body. |
| Unilateral | affecting or occurring on one side of the body |
| Bilateral | affecting or occurring on both sides of the body. |
| Dorsum | back side of the body or a body part (back of hand or top of foot) |
| Palmar | the palm side of the hand |
| Plantar | the sole or bottom of the foot |
| Cranial | toward the top of the head (or upper part of the body) |
| Caudal | toward the bottom of the head (or lower part of the body) |
| Distal | farther from the point of attachment or trunk |
| Proximinal | closer to the point of attachment or trunk |
| Inferior | toward the feet/lower part |
| Superior | toward the head/upper part |
| Anterior | toward the front of the body |
| Posterior | toward the back of the body |
