Historical Eras and Paleolithic/Neolithic Humans

| What is Prehistory? | Prehistory is the very first historical era in human history. It goes back millions of years. |
| What is the Paleolithic Era? | This is one of two periods within the Era of Prehistory. It lasted from 2.5 million years ago to 10,000 BC. Humans were hunter/gatherers during this time and were concerned mostly with survival. They were nomads who followed their food. |
| What is the Neolithic Era? | This is one of two periods within the Era of Prehistory. It lasted from 10,000 BC to 3,500 BC. Humans learned how to farm during this period and formed permanent towns/villages. They also domesticated animals and were no longer nomads. |
| What is Ancient History Era? | Ancient History is the historical era that comes after Prehistory. It lasted from 3,500 BC to AD 500. Civilizations began to form during this time, such as the Phoenicians, Assyrians, Greeks, and the Israelites. |
| What is Middle Ages Era? | The Middle Ages is the historical era that comes after Ancient History. It lasted from AD 500 to AD 1,500. This was a period when the Catholic Church was very powerful in Europe, the Crusades were fought, & the Black Plague killed many people in Europe. |
| What is the Modern Era? | The Modern Era came after the Middle Ages, and it lasted from AD 1,500 to the present. It was a period of Industrial growth, the Renaissance, and the Age of Reason (Enlightenment). |
| What was it like to live during the Paleolithic Period? | During the Paleolithic Period, people followed their food (were nomadic), gathered nuts, berries, and other naturally growing foods. They used flint stone for tools and weapons. They also discovered how to use fire. |
| What was it like to live during the Neolithic Period? | During the Neolithic Period, people learned how to farm and lived in one place (were no longer nomads). They also tamed animals and got work and meat/milk from them. Farming enabled civilization to emerge. |
| What is a Primary Source? | A primary source is information about history that is created by someone who participated in an event or witnessed an event. An example of this is a diary or a letter to a friend. |
| What is a Secondary Source? | A Secondary Source is information about history that is created by someone who did not witness or participate in an event. An example of a secondary source is a book written today about George Washington. |
| What is a timeline? | A timeline is a line that represents the passage of time. It is usually divided into years, decades, or centuries. |
| What are the two sides on a timeline? | The two sides of a timeline conist of AD and BC. They are also called CE and BCE. |
| What does AD mean? | AD means "Anno Domini." This is Latin for, "in the year of the lord." These are all of the years that occur after Jesus of Nazareth was born. |
| What does CE mean? | CE means, "Common Era." This is the same thing as AD. Some historians prefer this term because it is religiously neurtral (doesn't refer to a religious figure). |
| What does BC mean? | BC means, "Before Christ." These are all of the years that occur before the birth of Jesus of Nazareth. |
| What does BCE mean? | BCE means, "Before the Common Era." These are the same years as BC. Some historians prefer this term because it is religiously neutral (does not refer to a religious figure). |
