| nonspecific immunity | a type of immunity that protects the body from disease in general. |
| specific immunity | a type of immunity that protects the body against a particular disease that is invading the body at a given time. |
| lymph | a clear yellowish fluid that carries disease-fighting cells called lymphocytes. |
| lymphologist | a physician who diagnoses and treats conditions of the lymphatic system. |
| immunologist | a physician who diagnoses and treats disorders of the immune system, including |
| allergies. | an exaggerated or abnormal immune response to substances (allergens) that are typically harmless to most people |
| oncologist | a physician who specializes in treating cancer. |
| anaphylactic reaction | a dangerous allergic reaction that may cause swelling of the lips, tongue, and throat that can obstruct the airway; also called anaphylaxis. |
| mononucleosis | an illness caused by the Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV); symptoms include extreme fatigue, sore throat, and fever. |
| lymphedema | an abnormal buildup of lymph fluid in the body’s tissues. |
| lupus | a chronic autoimmune disease in which the body attacks its own healthy tissues. |
| opportunistic infection | an infection that invades the body when the immune system is weak and unable to defend itself. |
| tumor | a cluster of abnormally growing cells. |
| lymphoma | cancer of the lymphatic system; Hodgkin’s and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma are two types. |
| multiple myeloma | cancer affecting mature B cells; may result in abnormal antibodies and an imbalance in normal blood components. |
| erythrocytopenia | lack of red blood cells. |
| leukopenia | lack of white blood cells. |
