| circumcision | the removal of part of the foreskin of the penis. |
| menstruation | the monthly shedding of blood and tissue through the vagina that happens as part of a woman’s menstrual cycle; commonly called a period. |
| menopause | the end of menstruation; occurs when a woman has not had a menstrual period for 12 months. |
| human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) | a hormone associated with pregnancy; blood and/or urine may be tested for its presence to confirm pregnancy. |
| prenatal care | medical care provided during pregnancy. |
| certified nurse-midwife (CNM) | healthcare professional with graduate-level training in providing gynecological, prenatal, and postpartum care. |
| abortion | termination of a pregnancy. |
| fundal height | a measurement taken regularly during pregnancy to assess the growth of the fetus; measured from the pubic bone to the top (fundus) of the uterus. |
| chorionic villus sampling (CVS) | testing that may be performed during pregnancy to detect chromosomal disorders; involves taking and analyzing a sample from the placenta. |
| amniocentesis | testing that may be performed during pregnancy to detect chromosomal disorders; involves inserting a needle through the abdomen to collect a sample of amniotic fluid. |
| infertility | the inability to become pregnant. |
| labor | the body’s preparation for childbirth. |
| preterm birth | delivery of a baby before the 37th week of pregnancy. |
| placenta previa | a complication of pregnancy in which the placenta implants too low in the uterus, partially or completely covering the cervical outlet. |
| placental abruption | the sudden complete or partial separation of the placenta from the uterine wall. |
| preeclampsia | the sudden development of hypertension in pregnancy. |
| miscarriage | the death of an embryo or fetus before it is mature enough to survive outside the womb. |
| stillbirth | death of a fetus after it is mature enough to survive outside the womb; may occur before or during delivery. |
| gynecologist | a physician who specializes in the treatment of women, and of the female reproductive system in particular. |
| obstetrician | a physician who specializes in the care of women during pregnancy and childbirth. |
| neonatologist | a physician who specializes in care of newborn infants. |
| hydrocele | a condition in which fluid accumulates in the membrane around the testes. |
| benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) | a disorder that can occur in men as they age, in which the prostate becomes enlarged and causes problems with urination and/or emptying the bladder. |
| erectile dysfunction (ED) | a condition in which a male cannot get or keep an erection long enough to engage in sexual intercourse. |
| vaginitis | an infection of the vagina that may be caused by bacteria, protozoa, or fungus. |
| pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) | an infection of the uterus and ovaries, most often caused by sexually transmitted infections (STIs). |
| endometriosis | a condition that causes endometrial tissue to grow on the outer surface of the uterus. |
| mammogram | X-ray of the breast; regularly performed to screen for breast cancer. |
| Pap test | test in which cells from the cervix are collected and analyzed under a microscope to detect possible cancerous changes; also called a Pap smear. |
| chlamydia | a sexually transmitted infection that is caused by organisms introduced into the mucous membranes of the reproductive tract. |
| syphilis | a sexually transmitted infection caused by bacteria; if left untreated, it can cause brain damage, mental health disorders, and death. |
| gonorrhea | a sexually transmitted infection caused by bacteria; if left untreated, it can cause blindness, joint infection, sterility, and pelvic inflammatory disease. |
| genital herpes | an incurable type of sexually transmitted infection that is caused by herpes simplex viruses type 1 (HSV-1) or type 2 (HSV-2). |
| genital HPV | infection a sexually transmitted infection caused by human papillomavirus (HPV). |
| contraception | the medical term for measures taken to prevent pregnancy. |
| transgender | word to describe a person whose gender identity conf licts with their birth sex (sex assigned at birth due to anatomy); commonly shortened to trans. |
