pharynx throat
larynx voice box.
tonsils three sets of lymphatic tissue located in the oropharynx.
bronchus one of the two tubes that take air to the lungs (plural
bronchioles smaller branches from the bronchi; tubes that carry air further into the lungs, reaching the air sacs (alveoli).
pleura a two-layered membrane covering the lungs.
pulmonologist a physician who diagnoses and treats conditions of the lungs.
rhinitis inflammation of the mucous membranes lining the nasal passages.
sinusitis inflammation of the lining of the sinuses.
upper respiratory infection (URI) a viral or bacterial infection of the nose, sinuses, or throat; a cold is one example.
tonsillitis inflammation of the tonsils.
strep throat an illness caused by the bacterium Streptococcus pyogenes.
laryngitis an inflammation of the larynx.
obstructive sleep apnea a breathing disorder in which a person repeatedly stops breathing during sleep.
influenza a respiratory illness caused by a virus; common in the fall and winter months.
COVID-19 (coronavirus disease) droplet & airborne disease transmitted via droplets & particles produced by infected person; characterized by respiratory symptoms & can progress to severe symptoms, even death, esp in older people, have underlying health conditions, or are unvaccinated.
bronchitis an irritation and inflammation of the lining of the bronchi.
pleurisy a condition caused by inflammation of the thin layers of tissue that separate the lungs from the chest wall (the pleurae).
pneumonia a bacterial, viral, or fungal infection that causes acute inflammation in lung tissue, causing fever, chills, cough, greenish sputum, and rapid pulse.
chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) a chronic, progressive, and incurable lung disease that causes difficulty breathing, weakness, and a high risk of lung infections.
emphysema a chronic disease of the lungs that usually results from cigarette smoking.
pneumoconiosis a condition caused by inhalation of dust; can cause shortness of breath, cough, and activity intolerance; also known as interstitial lung disease.
asthma a chronic inflammatory disease that makes it difficult to breathe and causes coughing and wheezing.
bronchiectasis a condition in which the bronchial tubes are abnormally enlarged, causing chronic coughing, thick sputum, recurrent pneumonia, and weight loss.
lung cancer the growth of abnormal cells or tumors in the lungs.
tuberculosis a highly contagious disease caused by a bacterium, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, that is carried on mucous droplets suspended in the air; causes fatigue, loss of appetite, slight fever, prolonged coughing, and shortness of breath.
acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) a life-threatening condition in which the lungs fill with fluid and air cannot be exchanged effectively.
respiratory failure a condition in which the lungs cannot supply the blood with enough oxygen.
pulmonary function test (PFT) diagnostic tests that measure lung function and capacity.
spirometry a form of pulmonary function testing in which aspects of a patient’s breathing and lung capacity are measured by a machine.
