| organ | a structural unit in the body that performs a specific function. |
| cell | basic structural unit of the body that divides, develops, and dies, renewing tissues and organs. |
| chromosome | a structure in the nucleus of most cells that contains genetic information. |
| gene | the basic unit of heredity that passes traits from parents to offspring. |
| epithelial tissue | tissue that forms the skin and linings of the organs. |
| nerve tissue | tissue that makes up the brain, spinal cord, and sensory organs. |
| muscle tissue | tissue with the ability to contract and relax; makes up the skeletal muscles, smooth muscle, and cardiac muscle in the body. |
| connective tissue | tissue that makes up the bones, cartilage, and blood. |
| homeostasis | the condition in which all of the body’s systems are balanced and are working together to maintain internal stability. |
