| cervix | Lower opening of the uterus. |
| menarche | First menstrual period. |
| menopause | Permanent end of menstrual periods. |
| menstruation | Monthly shedding of the uterine lining. |
| ovary | Female gland that produces eggs and hormones. |
| ovulation | Release of an egg from the ovary. |
| uterine tube (Fallopian tube) | Tube that carries the egg to the uterus. |
| uterus | Organ where a baby develops during pregnancy. |
| vagina | Muscular canal leading from the uterus to the outside of the body. |
| vulva | External female genitalia. |
| amnion | Inner sac that surrounds and protects the fetus. |
| antepartum | Before childbirth. |
| chorion | Outer membrane surrounding the embryo and amnion. |
| dilation | Widening (opening) of the cervix during labor. |
| embryo | Developing baby during the first 8 weeks of pregnancy. |
| fetus | Developing baby from 8 weeks until birth. |
| gestation | The period of pregnancy (about 40 weeks). |
| labor | The process of childbirth. |
| neonate | newborn baby |
| placenta | Organ that provides oxygen and nutrients to the fetus. |
| postpartum | After childbirth. |
| ejaculation | Release of semen from the penis. |
| epididymis | Coiled tube where sperm mature and are stored. |
| prostate | Gland that adds fluid to semen. |
| semen | Fluid containing sperm and gland secretions. |
| sperm | Male reproductive cell. |
| testes | Male glands that produce sperm and testosterone. |
| vas deferens | Tube that carries sperm from the epididymis. |
| amenorrhea | Absence of menstrual periods. |
| breast cancer | Malignant tumor of the breast. |
| candidiasis | Yeast infection. |
| cervical cancer | Malignant tumor of the cervix. |
| dysmenorrhea | Painful menstrual periods. |
| endometriosis | Growth of uterine lining tissue outside the uterus. |
| mastitis | Inflammation of the breast. |
| menorrhagia | Heavy menstrual bleeding. |
| metrorrhagia | Bleeding between menstrual periods. |
| ovarian cyst | Fluid-filled sac on the ovary. |
| pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) | Infection of the female reproductive organs. |
| polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) | Hormonal disorder with multiple ovarian cysts. |
| vaginitis | Inflammation of the vagina. |
| eclampsia | Seizures caused by severe preeclampsia. |
| ectopic pregnancy (salpingocyesis) | Pregnancy outside the uterus, usually in a uterine tube. |
| infertility | Inability to become pregnant after one year of trying. |
| placenta previa | Placenta covers the opening of the cervix. |
| preeclampsia | Pregnancy condition causing high blood pressure. |
| spontaneous abortion | Natural loss of a pregnancy (miscarriage). |
| benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) | Noncancerous enlargement of the prostate. |
| cryptorchidism | Undescended testicle. |
| erectile dysfunction (ED) | Inability to achieve or maintain an erection. |
| hydrocele | Fluid-filled sac around a testicle. |
| prostate cancer | Malignant tumor of the prostate gland. |
| prostatitis | Inflammation of the prostate gland. |
| varicocele | Enlarged veins in the scrotum. |
| Amniocentesis | Removal of amniotic fluid for testing. |
| HPV test | Test for HPV infection of the cervix. |
| Hysterosalpingography (HSG) | X-ray of the uterus and uterine tubes. |
| Mammogram | X-ray image of the breast. |
| Mammography | Process of taking X-ray images of the breast. |
| Pap smear | Test that screens for cervical cancer. |
| Pelvic ultrasound | Ultrasound image of the pelvic organs. |
| Pregnancy test | Test that detects pregnancy. |
| Cesarean section (C-section) | Surgical delivery of a baby through the abdomen. |
| Dilation & Curettage (D&C) | Widening of the cervix and removal of uterine lining. |
| Episiotomy | Incision made to widen the vaginal opening during childbirth. |
| Hysterectomy | Surgical removal of the uterus. |
| Lumpectomy | Surgical removal of a breast lump. |
| Mastectomy | Surgical removal of a breast. |
| Tubal ligation | Surgical procedure to prevent pregnancy by blocking the uterine tubes. |
| Vasectomy | Surgical procedure to prevent pregnancy by cutting or sealing the vas deferens. |
| Apgar score | Evaluates neonate’s color, heart rate, muscle tone, respiratory rate, and response to stimulus at one minute and five minutes after birth. |
| priapism | persistent and painful erection due to pathological causes (not sexual arousal) |
| castration | Surgical removal of the testes or the ovaries |
| circumcision | Surgical removal of the prepuce (foreskin) of the penis. |
| prostate-specific antigen (PSA) | Blood test to screen for prostate cancer. |
