| communication | the process of exchanging information with others by sending and receiving messages. |
| verbal communication | communication involving the use of spoken or written words or sounds. |
| nonverbal communication | communication without words. |
| cliché | a phrase that is used over and over again and does not really mean anything. |
| diversity | a term used to describe the variety found among people. |
| bias | a judgmental response, which may be positive or negative, based on assumptions or personal beliefs; may be unconscious. |
| race | grouping of people based on physical characteristics shared by those with a common ancestry. |
| ethnicity | one aspect of a person’s identity, often reflecting a combination of race, culture, nationality, language, and other factors. |
| culture | a system of learned beliefs and behaviors practiced by a group of people. |
| gender identity | deeply felt sense of one’s gender. |
| sexual orientation | a person’s physical, emotional, and/or romantic attraction to another person. |
| gay | having physical, emotional, and/or romantic attraction for people of the same sex. |
| lesbian | a woman whose physical, emotional, and/or romantic attraction is for other women. |
| straight | word to describe a person whose physical, emotional, and/or romantic attraction is for people of the opposite sex. |
| bisexual | having physical, emotional, and/or romantic attraction for people of the same gender or a different gender. |
| pansexual | having physical, emotional, and/or romantic attraction for another person of any sex or gender identity. |
| asexual | relating to emotional or romantic partners in a nonsexual way. |
| population | in health care, a particular group of patients (e.g., geriatric patients). |
| objective information | information based on what a person sees, hears, touches, or smells; also called signs. |
| subjective information | information that a person cannot or did not observe, but is based on something reported to the person; also called symptoms. |
