| Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) | Chronic disease that blocks airflow |
| Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) | Virus causing respiratory infection |
| Percussion | Tapping body to assess lungs |
| Cystic Fibrosis (CF) | Genetic disease causing thick mucus |
| Arterial Blood Gases (ABG) | Test measuring oxygen and carbon dioxide |
| Pulmonary Function Test (PFT) | Test measuring lung function |
| Respiration | Exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide |
| Ventilation | Movement of air in and out |
| Pharynx | Throat; passage for air and food |
| Epiglottis | Flap covering airway during swallowing |
| Nasopharynx | Upper part of the throat behind the nose |
| Trachea | Windpipe |
| Bronchi | Main airways to the lungs |
| Alveoli | Tiny air sacs for gas exchange |
| Phlegm | Thick mucus from the lungs |

| Pulmonary emboli (PE) | Blood clots in the lungs |
| emphysema | chronic lung condition characterized by destruction of alveolar walls |
| histoplasmosis | fungal infection of the lungs |
| influenza (flu) | viral infection of the respiratory system |
| pneumonia | inflammatory condition of the lungs; |
| pulmonary edema | accumulation of an excessive amount of fluid in the lung tissues |
| pulmonary embolism (P E) | Obstruction of the pulmonary artery by a floating blood clot; causes infarct of lung tissue |
| pulmonary fibrosis | formation of fibrous scar tissue in the lung; leads to reduced ability to expand lungs |
| sleep apnea | breathing stops repeatedly during sleep; causes a drop in oxygen levels |
| tuberculosis (TB) | bacterial lung infection; |
| pleurisy | inflammation of the pleura; characterized by sharp pain with each breath |
| pneumothorax | collection of air in the pleural cavity; may result in a collapsed lung |
| oximetry | procedure for measuring oxygen level in blood; uses an oximeter |
| spirometry | procedure for measuring lung capacity using a spirometer |
| polysomnography | monitoring a sleeping patient to identify sleep apnea (Sleep Study) |
| continuous positive airway pressure (C P A P) | machine that supplies constant, steady air pressure through mask to keep the airway continuously open |
| endotracheal intubation | placement of a tube through the mouth and into the trachea to keep the airway open |
| nasal cannula | two-pronged plastic device to deliver oxygen into the nose |
| ventilator | machine that provides artificial ventilation for a patient unable to breathe alone |
