| capillaries | smallest blood vessle (where oxygen and nutrients are exchanged) |

| interventricular septum (in-ter-ven-TRIK-yoo-lar / SEP-tum) | wall between the ventricles |
| ventricles (VEN-trih-kulz) | lower pumping chambers of the heart |
| aorta (ay-OR-tah) | largest artery |
| diastole (dye-ASS-toh-lee) | relaxation phase of the heart between beats (filling phase) |
| inferior vena cava (VEE-nah / KAY-vah) | large vein carrying blood to the heart from the lower body |
| pulmonary artery (PULL-mon-air-ee) | artery carrying deoxygenated blood away from the heart to the lungs |
| pulmonary veins | veins carrying oxygenated blood to the heart from the lungs |
| superior vena cava | large vein carrying blood to the heart from the upper body |
| systole (SIS-toh-lee) | contraction phase of the heart (when the heart is pumping) |
| vein | blood vessel that carries blood toward the heart |

| congestive heart failure (CHF) (kon-JESS-tiv) | condition where the heart cannot pump effectively |
| coronary artery disease (CAD) (KOR-ah-nair-ee) | narrowying of the arteries in the heart |
| myocardial infarction (MI) (my-oh-KAR-dee-al / in-FARK-shun) | Heart attack |
| arrhythmia (ah-RITH-mee-ah) | abnormal heart rhythm |
| asystole (ay-SIS-toh-lee) | absence of a heart beat |

| deep vein thrombosis (DVT) (throm-BOH-sis) | blood clot in a deep vein |
| hypertension (HTN) (high-per-TEN-shun) | high blood pressure |
| hypotension (high-poh-TEN-shun) | low blood pressure |
| phlebitis (fleh-BYE-tis) | inflammation of a vein |
| Raynaud phenomenon (ray-NO) | reduced blood flow to fingers and toes causing a pallor in the phalange |
| thrombophlebitis (throm-boh-fleh-BYE-tis) | inflammation of a vein associated with a blood clot |
| varicose veins (VAIR-ih-kohs) | enlarged (dilated) vein |
| sphygmomanometer (sfig-moh-mah-NOM-eh-ter) | blood pressure cuff |
| stethoscope (STETH-oh-skohp) | instrument used to listen to body sounds |
| antiography (an-jee-OG-rah-fee) | imaging of blood vessels using contrast dye |
| echocardiography (ECHO) (ek-oh-kar-dee-OG-rah-fee) | ultrasound imaging of the heart |
| cardiac catheterization (KAR-dee-ak / kath-eh-ter-ih-ZAY-shun) | procedure to examine or treat the heart |
| catheter (KATH-eh-ter) | thin tube inserted in the body for diagnostic or treatment purposes |
| electrocardiography (ECG, EKG) (ee-lek-troh-kar-dee-OG-rah-fee) | recording of the heart's electrical activity |
| automated external defibrillator (AED) | portable device that analyzes heart rhythm and delivers a shock if needed |
| cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) (kar-dee-oh-PULL-mon-air-ee / ree-sus-ih-TAY-shun) | emergency procedure that includes chest compressions and rescue breathing |
| defibrillation (dee-fib-rih-LAY-shun) | delivery of an electrical shock to restore normal heart rhythm |
| coronary artry bypass graft (CABG) | surgical procedure to reroute blood around a blocked coronary artery |
| angioplasty (AN-jee-oh-olas-tee) | procedure that opens a narrowed or blocked blood vessel |
| stent | small mesh tube placed in an artery to keep it open |
