6th grade map skills

TermDefinition
Continent One of the 7 largest pieces of land on Earth.
Country A land with its own government, laws, and flag. It sits inside a continent
State A smaller part of a country that has its own local rules
Town/City A place where people live, work, and go to school. It sits inside a state.
Street Address The exact place where a specific building or home stands.
Map A drawing of a place from above that shows where things are.
Compass Rose A tool printed on a map that shows directions.
Direction The line or course someone or something moves along.
North The direction pointing toward the top of most maps.
South The direction pointing toward the bottom of most maps (opposite of North).
East The direction pointing to the right on most maps. The sun rises in that direction.
West The direction pointing to the left on most maps. The sun sets in in that direction.
Symbol A small drawing, shape, or color that stands for a real thing.
