Amblyopia (ăm”blē•ō’pē•ă) Unilateral reduction in visual acuity in which there is no apparent pathological condition of the eye.
Atropine (ăt’rō•pēn) Anticholinergic agent that counteracts effects of parasympathetic stimulation.
Cellulitis (sĕl•ū•lī’tĭs) Inflammation of cellular or connective tissue.
Conjunctiva (kŏn”jŭnk•tĭ’vă) Mucous membrane lining the eyelids.
Diplopia (dĭp•lō’pē•ă) Double vision.
Macula (măk’ū•lă) Small, colored spot or thickening.
Myringotomy (mĭr•ĭn•gŏt ō•mē) Surgical incision of the tympanic membrane (eardrum).
Phacoemulsification (făk”ō•ē•mŭl’sĭ•fĭ•kā”shŭn) Ultrasonic device that disintegrates cataracts so they can be aspirated and removed.
Photophobia (fō”tō•fō’bē•ă) Unusual intolerance of light.
Seborrhea (sĕb•ŏr•ē’ă) Functional disease of the sebaceous glands marked by an increase in the amount, and often an alteration of the quality, of the sebaceous secretion.
Serous (sēr’ŭs) Pertaining to serum.
Stapedectomy (stā”pĕ•dĕk’tō•mē) Excision of the stapes in the ear to improve hearing, especially in cases of otosclerosis. The stapes is replaced by a prosthesis.
Suppurative (sŭp’ū•ră”tĭv) Pus producing.
Tinnitus (tĭn•ī’tŭs) Ringing, buzzing, tinkling, or hissing sound in the ear.
Tonometer (tŏn•ŏm’ĕ•tĕr) Instrument to measure intraocular pressure.
Tympanoplasty (tĭm”păn•ō•plăs’tē) Surgery to reconstruct or repair the eardrum.
Vertigo (vĕr’tĭ•gō) Sensation of spinning around in space or of having objects spin around oneself.
