Anovulation (an’’ov’’yū•lā’shŏn) Failure to ovulate.
Anuria (ăn•ū’rē•ă) Absence of urine formation.
Cervicitis (sĕr•vĭ•sī’tĭs) Inflammation of the cervix.
Chancre (shăng’kĕr) Firm, red, ulcerated sore. A chancre is the primary indication of syphilis; it occurs at the point of entry of the infection.
Conization (kŏn•ĭ•zā’shŭn) Surgical removal of a cone of tissue, such as excision of cervical tissue for microscopic examination.
Cryoablation (kri’’o•ab•la’shŭn) A procedure to remove tissue using extreme cold.
Dilation and curettage (D&C) (dī•lā’•shŭn ănd kū’rĕ•tăzh) The uterine cervical canal is expanded (dilated) to allow scraping (curettage) of the surface lining of the uterus.
Effacement (ē•fās’mĕnt) Dilation of the cervix.
Epididymis (pl. epididymides) (ĕp’’ĭ•dĭd’ ĭ•mĭs, ĕp’’ĭ•dĭd’ĭ•mĭ•dēz) A small, oblong organ resting on and beside the posterior surface of a testis, consisting of a convoluted tube 13 to 20 feet long, enveloped in the tunica vaginalis, ending in the ductus deferens.
Hysterosalpingography (hĭs’’tĕr•ō•săl’’pĭn•gŏg’ră•fē) Use of x-rays to visualize the uterus and fallopian tubes.
Leiomyoma (lī’’ō•mī•ō’mă) Tumor of smooth-muscle tissue.
Lochia (lō’kē•ă) Postpartum discharge of blood, mucus, and tissue from the uterus.
Meiosis (mī•ō’sĭs) Process of two successive cell divisions, producing cells, egg, or sperm that contain half the number of chromosomes in somatic cells. When fertilization occurs, the nuclei of the sperm and ovum fuse and produce a zygote with the full chromosome complement.
Menarche (mĕn•ăr’kē) Initial menstrual cycle, marking the onset of fertility.
Metrorrhea (me’’trō•rē’ă) Abnormal uterine discharge.
Nystagmus (nĭs•tăg’mŭs) Rhythmic, involuntary movement of the eyeball.
Oogenesis (ō’’ō•jĕn’ĕ•sĭs) The creation of the mature human ovum.
Orchiectomy (or-kē-’ek-tǝ-mē) Surgical removal of a testis.
Panhysterosalpingo-oophorectomy (păn•hĭs’’tēr•ō•săl’’pĭng•gō-ō’’ ŏf•ō•rēk’tō•mē) Surgical removal of the entire uterus, including the cervix, ovaries, and fallopian tubes.
Parturition (păr•tū•rĭsh’ŭn) Act of giving birth.
Primigravida (prī’’mĭ•grăv’ĭ•dă) Woman during her first pregnancy.
Prostaglandin (prŏs’’tă•glăn’dĭn) Class of chemically related fatty acids present in many body tissues and having the ability to stimulate smooth-muscle contractions, lower blood pressure, and regulate or influence many other body functions.
Purulent (pūr’ū•lĕnt) Containing pus.
Rhonchus (pl. rhonchi) (rŏng’kŭs) Rale or rattling in the throat, especially when it resembles snoring.
Spermatogenesis (spĕr’’măt•ō•jĕn’ĕ•sĭs) Process of creating a mature human sperm cell.
Teratoma (tĕr•ă•tō’mă) Tumor composed of several different tissue types, none of which are normally found in the area of occurrence. Teratomas usually occur in the testes or ovaries.
Varicocele (văr’ĭ•kō•sēl) Dilation of the complex network of veins that comprise part of the spermatic cord to form a palpable swelling within the scrotum.
