Antipyretic (ăn’’tĭ•pī•rĕt’ĭk) Drug or agent that reduces fever.
Ascites (ă•sī’tēz) Abnormal accumulation of fluid in the peritoneal cavity.
Azotemia (āz’’ō•tē’mē•ă) Presence of urea in the blood.
Bacteriuria (bak•tēr’’ē•ū’rē•ă) The presence of bacteria in the urine.
Calyx (kā’lĭks) Cuplike extension of the renal pelvis that encloses the papilla of a renal pyramid; urine from the papillary duct empties into it.
Creatinine (krē•ăt’ĭn•ĭn) Nitrogen-based compound formed in muscle tissue, passed into the bloodstream, and excreted in the urine. Elevated levels of creatinine in the blood may indicate a kidney disorder.
Cystectomy (sĭs•tĕk’tō•mē) Removal of a cyst. Excision of the cystic duct and the gallbladder. Excision of all or part of the urinary bladder.
Dysuria (dĭs•ū’rē•ă) Difficult or painful urination, symptomatic of numerous conditions.
Electrolyte (ē•lĕk’trō•līt) Ionized salts present in blood and tissue fluids and within cells. They are involved in all metabolic processes and are essential to the normal functioning of all cells.
Hematuria (hē’’mă•tū’rē•ă) Blood in the urine.
Hyperkalemia (hī’’pĕr•kă•lē’mē•ă) Excessive amount of potassium in the blood, usually caused by inadequate excretion of potassium or the shift of potassium from tissues.
Hyperlipemia (hī’’pĕr•lĭp•ē’mē•ă) Excess levels of fatlike substances called lipids in the blood.
Hyperparathyroidism (hī’’pĕr•păr’’ă•thī’roy•dĭzm) Oversecretion of parathyroid hormone by the parathyroid glands.
Hypoalbuminemia (hī’’pō•ăl•bū’’mĭn•ē’mē•ă) Abnormally low levels of a protein called albumin in the blood plasma.
Incontinence (ĭn•kŏn’tǝ•nǝns) Inability to control the passage of urine, semen, or feces due to one or more physiological or psychological conditions.
Ischemia (ĭs•kē’mē•ă) Temporary deficiency of blood in a body part due to a constriction or obstruction of a blood vessel.
Lipiduria (lĭp’’ĭ•dū’rē•ă) Lipids in the urine.
Nocturia (nŏk•tū’rē•ă) Excessive urination at night.
Oliguria (ŏl•ĭg•ū’rē•ă) Reduced urine secretion.
Pallor (păl’ŏr) Lack of color; paleness, as of the skin.
Proteinuria (prō’’tē•ĭn•ū’rē•ă) An excess of serum proteins in the urine.
Pyuria (pī•ūr’ē•ă) Pus in the urine.
Transurethral resection (trăns’’ū•re’thrăl rē•sĕk’shŭn) (Usually of prostate.) Visualizing the prostate through the urethra; removing tissue by electrocautery or sharp dissection.
Urea (ū•rē’ă) Chief nitrogenous constituent of urine.
Uremia (ū•rē’mē•ă) Toxic condition associated with chronic renal failure and produced by excess levels of urea, creatinine, and other nitrogen-based compounds in the blood.
