| Allogeneic (ăl’’ō•jĕ•nē’ĭk) | Belonging to the same species but having a different genetic constitution. |
| Anaplasia (ăn”ă•plā’zē•ă) | Loss of structural differentiation, as seen in malignant neoplasms. |
| Anaplastic (an•ǝ•’plas•tik) | A malignant tumor that has lost its cell definition and function |
| Autologous (aw•tŏl’ō•gŭs) | Originating within an individual, especially a factor present in tissues or fluids. |
| Carcinogen (kăr•sĭn’ō•jĭn) | Any substance or agent that can produce cancer. |
| Carcinoma in situ (kăr’’sĭn•ō’mă ĕn si’tū) | Malignant cell changes in the epithelial tissue that do not extend beyond the basement membrane; “cancer in place.” |
| Dysplasia (dĭs•plā’zē•ă) | Alteration in size, shape, and organization of mature cells. |
| En bloc (ĕn blŏk’) | To remove as one piece (in surgery). |
| Epithelial (ĕp’’ĭ•thē’lē•ăl) | Pertaining to the layer of cells forming the outer surface of the body, the lining of the body cavities, and principal tubes and passageways. |

| Leukoplakia (loo’’kō•pla’kē•ă) | White spots or patches on mucous membrane of tongue or cheek. |
| Mesothelioma (mĕs’’ō•thē•lē•ō’mă) | A malignant tumor derived from the mesothelial cells of the pleura, peritoneum, or pericardium. It is found most often in smokers or persons with a history of exposure to asbestos. |
| Metastasis (metastasize) (mĕ•tăs’tă•sĭs) | Movement of bacteria or body cells, especially cancer cells, from one part of the body to the other, typically by way of the circulatory system. |
| Palliative (pălē•ă•tĭv) | Treatment provided to relieve the symptoms of a disease rather than to effect a cure. |
| Radioisotope (rā’’dē•ō•ī’sō•tōp) | Radioactive form of an element. Some are commonly used for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes. |
| Reed-Sternberg cell (rēd•stĕrn’bĕrg sĕl) | Giant connective tissue cells with one or two large nuclei that are characteristic of Hodgkin disease. |
| Sarcomas (săr•kō’măs) | A cancer arising from mesenchymal tissue, such as muscle or bone, which may affect the bones, bladder, kidneys, liver, lungs, parotids, and spleen. |
| Syngeneic (sĭn•jĕ•nē’ĭk) | Descriptive of individuals or cells without detectable tissue incompatibility. |
