What is hydrotherapy? The use of water in any of its three forms (solid, liquid, or vapor) internally or externally, in the treatment of disease or trauma. Hydrotherapy is also used to manipulate blood flow and return the body to homeostasis.
Why is water an effective medium for hydrotherapy? accessible, abundant, affordable, universal solvent, high specific heat, compatability with body, donductivity, easy tempurature control, fluidity, can be used in any form
What is the tempurature for HOT? 100-104 degrees
What is the tempurature for LUKEWARM? 80-91 degrees
What is the tempurature for COLD? 55-64 degrees
What is the tempurature for paraffin wax? 120 degrees
What is the tempurature for ICE? 32 degrees
What is the tempurature for the hydroculator? 160-166 degrees
At what tempurature do burns occur? 125 degrees
What are the general contraindications of hydrotherapy? rheumatoid arthritis, pregnancy, multiple sclerosis, heart disorders, sevefre kidney infection, diabetes, peripheral neuropathy, high/low blood pressure, infectious skin disorders, cancer, vascular disease, undiagnosed illness, whiplash, HIV/AIDS
What are the contraindications for cold treatments? acute asthma, cold allergies, raynaud's phenomenon
What are the contraindications for hot treatments? acute inflammation, heat sensitivities, burns, infection/hypertension, varicose veins, malignancy, sunburn, hemorrhage, liniments/heat rubs have been used
What are the negative reactions to hydrotherapy? cyanosis, red marbling of skin, pain, shivering, cold extremities, congestion in head, dizziness/lightheadedness, faintness, fatigue, or nausea
When does the Acute Inflammatory Phase occur? immediately post-injury (can last 7-10 days)
What kind of treatment can be used during the Acute Inflammatory Phase? cold
What is the purpose of the Acute Inflammatory Phase? prevent spread of infection, get rid of waste
What is the physiological response of the Acute Inflammatory Phase? inflammatory process
What kind of treatment can be used during the Subacute Phase? cold-mild heat
When does the Subacute Phase occur? 7-21 days post injury
What is the purpose of the Subacute Phase? transition phase; guides body into gradual restoration of damaged tissue
What is the physiological response of the Subacute Phase? rebuild soft tissue structure
During which phase of healing is reinjury a risk? early subacute
During which phase of healing does scar tissue start to develop? late subacute
What kind of treatment can be used during the Chronic Phase? warm-hot
When does the Chronic Phase occur? 21 days post injury
What is the purpose of the Chronic Phase? remodel and restructure
What is the physiological response of the Chronic Phase? fibers go from random to more organized pattern
When does the Chronic Inflammation phase occur? when ther is repeated overuse of weakened injury site
What is the duration of a short cold treatment? less than one minute
What is the duration of a long cold treatment? more than one minute, up to 15
What is the physiological effects of a short cold treatment? initial vasoconstriction, secondary vasodialation, vasoconstriction
What is the physiological effects of a long cold treatment? vasoconstriction
What are the circulatory effects of a short cold treatment? increased circulation, increased metabolism
What are the circulatory effects of a long cold treatment? decreased circulation, decreased metabolism
What are the 3 stages of cold? cold, pain, numbness
What are the benefits of cold water treatments? anesthetic, burn management, tonic
What are the applications for cold treatments? ice pack, slush pack, ice massage, cold immersion bath, heating compress
What is the duration of a short heat treatment? less than 5 min
What is the duration of a long heat treatment? more than 5, up to 30 min
What is the physiological effects of a short heat treatment? vasodialation
What is the physiological effects of a long heat treatment? venous stasis
What are the circulatory effects of a short heat treatment? increased circulation, increased metabolism
What are the circulatory effects of a long heat treatment? decreased circulation, increased metabolism
What are teh benefits of a hot water treatment? antiseptic, diaphoretic, expectorant, sedative
What are some applications for heat treatments? gel packs, paraffin bath, hot footbath, hot immersion bath, whirlpool, sitz bath, steam or sauna, showers, hot rock
How often do hydrocollators need to be cleaned? every two weeks
During a contrast treatment how long does the short heat and short cold last in one rep? 3 min hot, 30 sec cold
What are characteristics of the acute phase? inflammation, redness or discoloration, heat, pain at rest and in motion, limited or absence of motion, bleeding
What are characteristics of the subacute phase? mild inflammation, edema, pain, stiffness, increase motion, discoloration, fading/change
What are characteristics of the chronic phase? stiffness, pain with motion but improving, pain with weight bearing, loss of ROM, possible edema/inflammation
What can you adjust to change the intensity of a treatment? tempurature, duration, frequency, time of day, pressure, surface area exposed, additives
What is the purpose of exfoliation? removal of dead skin cells, improved skin circulation, increased elimination, improved nutrient exchange and moisture absorption through the skin, increased energy
