| Anatomic Position | Standard universal posture of the human body used by medical professionals and scientists. |
| Prone | Lying on your stomach/facing downwards. |
| Supine | Lying on your back/facing upwards. |
| Abdominal Cavity | The largest hollow space in the human body. |
| Anterior | Directed towards the front of the body. |
| Posterior | Directed towards the rear of the body. |
| Vertebral Cavity | Extended space within the backbone, which protects the Spinal Cord, nerve roots and surrounding meninges. |
| Superior | Higher in position. |
| Inferior | Lower in position. |
| Abdominopelvic Cavity | Large continuous ventral body cavity, located below the diaphram. |
| Ventral | Located on or near the belly/front surface of the human body. |
| Left Hypochondriac | Upper left section of abdomen, right below your ribcage. |
| Frontal Plane | An imaginary vertical line that divides your body into front anterior. |
| Cranial | Skull or cranium. |
| Umbilical | Near or relating to the belly button, or a vital nurturing connection. |
| Caudal | Toward the tailbone. |
| Transverse Plane | an imaginary line that divides the body into upper & lower sections |
| Pelvic Cavity | A funnel-shaped anatomical space enclosed by the bony pelvis. |
| Hypogastric | The lower middle region of the abdomen, below the belly button above the pubic bone. |
| Distal | Directional term used to describe a body part or structure located farthest from the center of the body. |
| Medial | Toward the middle or center of the body. |
| Epigastric | the upper-central region of the abdomen, the area just below the breastbone and above the belly button |
| Dorsal Cavity | a continuous, fluid-filled space located on the back side of the human body. |
| Superficial | Something existing, occurring, or located only on the surface. |
| Right Lumbar | The right side of the lower back. |
| Thoracic Cavity | The fluid-filled chamber in the chest that protects vital organs. |
| Deep | A structure /organ that is located farther away from the surface of the body. |
| Homeostasis | Any self-regulating process by which a biological system maintains internal stability. |
| Right Hypochondriac | Upper right section of abdomen, right below your ribcage. |
| Sagittal Plane | An imaginary vertical line that divides the body into left and right halves |
| Dorsal | On, near, or relating to the back or upper surface of an organism or structure. |
| Left Iliac | Structures on the lower left side of the body, relating to the ilium. |
| Ventral Cavity | A large, fluid filled space located at the front of the torso. |
| Lateral | Situated on, directed toward, or coming from the side. |
| Midsagittal Plane | An imaginary vertical line that bisects the body directly down the middle, dividing it into perfectly equal right and left halves |
| Proximal | Closer to the center of the body, a trunk, or the point of attachment where a limb or organ originates. |
| Right Iliac | Structures on the lower right side of the body, relating to the ilium. |
| Coronal Plane | a vertical, side-to-side anatomical plane that divides the body or its organs into front and back sections. |
| Cranial Cavity | The fluid-filled space within the skull that houses and protects the brain. |
| Left Lumbar | The left side of the lower back. |
