Stalin The brutal dictator of the Soviet Union who transformed the country through industrialization and total government control.
Mussolini The Italian leader known as "Il Duce" who founded the Fascist Party and allied with Germany.
Abyssinia The African nation (Ethiopia) invaded by Italy in 1935.
Manchuria The resource-rich region of China invaded by Japan in 1931.
Hirohito The Emperor of Japan who was viewed as a god-like figure during Japan’s military expansion.
Tojo The military general and prime minister of Japan who directed much of the country's war effort.
Holodomor The man-made famine in Ukraine during the early 1930s that killed millions of people.
Reichstag The German parliament building that was destroyed by fire in 1933.
Chancellor The high-ranking government position Hitler was appointed to before taking complete control of Germany.
Weimar Republic The democratic government of Germany between the end of World War I and the rise of the Nazis.
Rhineland The demilitarized zone in western Germany that Hitler remilitarized in 1936.
Gestapo The secret state police in Nazi Germany that used terror and spying to eliminate opposition.
Five Year Plan A series of centralized economic plans designed to rapidly industrialize the Soviet Union.
Communist The political party in the Soviet Union that sought to eliminate private property and place the state in control of industry.
