Whole Body

TermDefinition
anatomic position Body standing upright, with the feet at shoulder width and parallel, toes forward. The upper limbs are held out to each side, and the palms of the hands face forward.

abdominal cavity large hollow space in the torso located below the chest and above the pelvis.
anterior Describes the front or direction toward the front of the body.
posterior Describes the back or direction toward the back of the body
vertebral cavity Body cavity within the vertebral column that contains the spinal cord.
superior Above or toward the head or upper part of structure.
inferior Below or toward the feet or lower part of a structure.
abdominolpelvic cavity Body cavity below the diaphragm that contains the abdominal and pelvic organs
ventral toward the front or belly side of the body
left hypochondriac The upper left region of the abdomen located beneath the ribs.
frontal plane Plane that divides the body or an organ into an anterior (front) portion and a posterior (rear) portion.
cranial Pertaining to the cranium
umbilical The central region of the abdomen surrounding the navel
caudal A directional term meaning toward the tail or lower end of the body; in humans, toward the feet.
transverse plane Plane that divides the body or organ horizontally into upper and lower portions.
Pelvic cavity The lower part of the abdominopelvic cavity that contains the bladder, reproductive organs, and rectum
hypogastric The lower middle region of the abdomen located below the umbilical region.
distal Describes a position in a limb that is farther from the point of attachment or the trunk of the body
medial Describes the middle or direction toward the middle of the body.
epigastric The upper middle region of the abdomen located above the stomach.
dorsal cavity The body cavity located along the back of the body that contains the brain and spinal cord.
superficial Describes a position closer to the surface of the body.
right lumbar The middle right region of the abdomen located near the waist
thoracic cavity The chest cavity that contains the heart, lungs, and other organs above the diaphragm.
deep Describes a position farther from the surface of the body.
homeostasis Biological process that results in stable equilibrium.
right hypochondriac The upper right region of the abdomen located beneath the ribs.
sagittal plane vertical anatomical position that slices the body into left and right sides.
dorsal A directional term meaning toward the back side of the body.
left iliac The lower left region of the abdomen located near the hip bone
ventral cavity The large body cavity on the front side of the body that includes the thoracic and abdominopelvic cavities.
lateral Describes the side or direction toward the side of the body.
midsagittal plane An imaginary plane that divides the body into equal right and left halves.
proximal Describes a position in a limb that is nearer to the point of attachment or the trunk of the body.
right iliac The lower right region of the abdomen located near the hip bone.
coronal plane An imaginary plane that divides the body into front and back portions.
cranial cavity The space formed inside the skull that the brain occupies.
left lumbar The middle left region of the abdomen located near the waist.
