WEEK 9:

Health behaviour change: models and interventions:

QuestionAnswer
social cognition includes beliefs/ attitudes/ knowledge about the world how we make sense of the world how we regulate our behaviours
health belief model describes Their beliefs about health problems The perceived benefits of action The barriers to action Individual self efficacy
effectiveness of information depends on source of information (eg credibility and attractiveness) two sided argument (people want to make their own decisions so need pros and cons) nature of message (greater fear = behaviour change)
theory of planned behaviour (TPB) describes suggests what constraints might be on a person to stop them from doing a particular behaviour where intentions dont always turn into actions
interventions using HBM ensure people understand threat, minimise barriers increase cues to action and increase self efficacy
interventions using TPB think about peoples resources and opportunities and what normative beliefs they have
interventions using SoC is someone ready to move from thinking about change to actually doing it and how can young help them eg using motivational interviewing
what is motivational interviewing type of counselling which is patient centred and it explores and resolves ambivalence about behaviour change which is useful for people who are unmotivated and unprepared for change
