The Dark Ages, Feudalism, Crusades, and Renaissance

| The Crusades | A series of wars between Christians and Muslims in Southwest Asia |
| The Holy Land | The Land Promised to Abraham, the city Jerusalem |
| The Byzantine Empire | The Medieval Empire in Eastern Europe that was a continuation of the Eastern Roman Empire |
| The purpose of the Crusades | To take control of the Holy Land |
| The Black Death | A deadly disease that swept through Europe between 1347 and 1351 |
| Rats | The carrier of the plague infected fleas |
| Buboes | The main symptom of the Black Death, the name for the swollen lymph nodes that cover the infected person's body |
| Peasants | The Group in Feudal Europe who got more rights after the Black Death |
| Feudalism | A system where kings gave land to nobles and peasants had to work on that land |
| France | The Country that started feudalism in Europe |
| Manor System | A system that had serfs live and work in and around a castle or estate owned by a Lord or Knight |
| The Magna Carta | A document signed in 1215 in England that required the king to honor certain rights |
| Importance of the Magna Carta | It showed that the king was losing power in England |
| The Renaissance | The period after the Middle Ages where art, science, and technology were "reborn" |
| Medieval | A term referring to the Middle Ages |
| The fall of the Roman Empire | The event that started the Medieval period in Europe |
| Vassal | A knight who has promised to protect a lord's land |
| The Pope | The leader of the Christian Church and most powerful man in Medieval Europe |
| Monk | A religious man who lived away from society, could read, write, and made new copies of books |
| Medieval Social Hierarchy | Ranked from most to least powerful: Pope, King, Noble, Priest, Knight, Peasant |
| Vikings | A group from Northern Europe known for attacking and stealing from others |
| Importance of Parliament | It represents democracy coming back to Europe |
| Success of the Crusades | Unsuccessful; they led to many deaths without much gained |
| Power of the Christian Church | Based on the fact that Europeans were terrified of Hell and looked to the Church for saving |
| Excommunication | The power of the pope to remove anyone from the church |
| Silk Road | The Crusades lead Europeans to be interested in restarting trade on this global trade network that ran from China to Europe |
| Renaissance | The period at the end of the Middle Ages, where Europe saw a "rebirth" of Classical Ideas |
| Parliament | The Group of elected people who made laws in England after the Magna Carta was signed |
