QuestionAnswer
Why are soil organisms grouped according to the roles and processes they carry out? Soils contain a very high diversity of organisms that interact as wells as determin organic matter decomposition and nutrient recycling.
Why is soil condition so important? The habitat space in soil is defined by the size, organisation and connectivity of the soil pore network.
Why do we group soil organisms into who's eating who? Trophic levels refer to the types of food consumed and energy flow through the soil web.
Which of the following are deemed beneficial- moles, earthworm, nitrogen-fixing bacteria, mycorrhizae? All these soil dwelling organisms consume food to get energy, grow and reproduce.
What is humus? Dead/decaying plant and animal material.
What level of organic matter is typically found in farmland soils? 2-10%
How many microorganisms does one teaspoon of topsoil contain? upto 6 billion
Why is "goo" so important? Polysaccharide gums exuded by soil fauna help to stabilise crumb structure.
What gives healthy soil it's fresh, earthy smell? Humus
