Soil pH

Acid/alkali

QuestionAnswer
Why is pH important? It dictates which plants can grow or if there is pollution.
Why is very acid or alkaline soils problematic? It locks up nutrients, making them unavailable to plants.
Which elements build up in strongly acid soils? Iron, Aluminium
How can soil acidity be corrected? Add lime
What is the correct order of pH for the following substances - vinegar, ammonia, seawater? 3, 12, 8
What happens to soil biological activity at high pH ? Relatively high pH soils affect nutrient availability, especially those of phosphorus and micronutrients.
What happens to soil biological activity at low pH ? Under pH 5.5, soil biological activity tends to slow down, and root growth and function become inhibited.
