checks and balances a system in government that gives each branch the power to check, or limit, the power of the other branches
toga a large cloth draped around the body worn for formal events by men in ancient Rome [know what one looks like]
civic having to do with citizens or citizenship
rule of law the principle that all people in a society are expected to obey the law, and laws are communicated and applied fairly regardless of a person's status or position
executive branch the branch of government responsible for carrying out and enforcing laws
republic a form of government where people rule themselves through elected representatives
judicial branch the branch of government responsible to enforcing and carrying out laws
representative democracy a government in which the people have the power, but elect officials to represent them
plebeian a farmer, merchant, laborer, artisan, or soldier in ancient Rome
patrician a wealthy landowner in ancient Rome who held property, money, and a high position in government
