| civic | having to do with citizens or citizenship |
| rule of law | the principle that all people in a society are expected to obey the law, and laws are communicated and applied fairly regardless of a person's status or position |
| executive branch | the branch of government responsible for carrying out and enforcing laws |
| republic | a form of government where people rule themselves through elected representatives |
| judicial branch | the branch of government responsible to enforcing and carrying out laws |
| representative democracy | a government in which the people have the power, but elect officials to represent them |
| plebeian | a farmer, merchant, laborer, artisan, or soldier in ancient Rome |
| patrician | a wealthy landowner in ancient Rome who held property, money, and a high position in government |
