Electrocardiogram Record of electrical currents of the heart
Atrial fibrillation Quivering or spontaneous contraction of muscle fibers in the heart's atrium
Cardiomyopathy Disease of the heart muscle
Aneurysm Bulge in a blood vessel
Hypertension High blood pressure
Hypotension Low blood pressure
Anticoagulant Drug that opposes the coagulation of the blood; prevents blood clotting
Thrombolytic Drug that breaks down clots; Dissolves thrombus
Cardiomyotomy Incision into the heart muscle
Embolectomy Surgical removal of an embolus
Ecchymosis A large bruise; Greek for "to pour out"
Anemia Reduction/decreased number of red blood cells noticed by the patient as weakness/fatigue
Petechia A small bruise; Small capillary pin-point red or purple spot
Erythrocyte Red blood cell
Splenectopy Displacement of the spleen; sometimes called floating spleen
Hematocrit A test to judge or separate the blood; used to determine the ratio of red blood cells to total blood volume
Hemogloblin Iron-containing pigment in red blood cells that carries oxygen to the cells
Sphygmomanometer Fancy name for the device used to measure blood pressure
Antibody Substance produced by the body in response to an antigen; Neutralized invaders like bacteria or viruses
Antigen Substance that causes the body to produce antibodies; triggers immune response
Lymphadenitis Inflammation of a lymph node or gland
Hemostatic Drug that stops the flow of blood
Thelarche Beginning of breast development
Goiter Swollen or enlargement thyroid gland
Insulin Hormone secreted by the pancreas that controls the metabolism and uptake of sugar and fats
Metabolism Breakdown of matter into energy
Adrenal insufficiency Condition in which the adrenal glands underproduce necessary hormones
Diabetes mellitus Metabolic disease characterized by excessive urination and hyperglycemia; caused by insulin deficiency
Thyroidotomy Incision into the thyroid
Tinnitus Ringing in the ears
Lacrimation Formation of tears
Nystagmus Involuntary or fast back-and-forth movement of the eyes
Laryngectomy Surgical removal of the larynx (voice box)
Catatonia Condition characterized by reduced muscle tone
Dementia Loss/decline in mental function
Dyslexia Difficulty reading
Ataxia Lack of coordination
Aphasia Inability to speak
Diabetic ketoacidosis Acidity of the blood caused by the presence of ketone bodies produced when the body is unable to burn sugar; thus, it must burn fat for energy
Apathy Lack of emotion
Stroke Loss of brain function caused by interruption of blood flow/supply to the brain
Hemorrhagic stroke A stroke where the blood loss is caused by the rupture of a blood vessel
Ischemic stroke A stroke where the blood loss is caused by a blockage
Transient Ischemic attack (TIA) A "mini stroke" caused by the blockage of a blood vessel, which goes away within 24hrs
Anorexia Eating disorder characterized by the patients restricting food or refusing to eat
Bulimia Eating disorder characterized by overeating and usually followed by forced purging or getting rid of food
Schizophrenia Mental illness characterized by delusions, hallucinations, and disordered speech
Anesthetic Drug that causes loss of sensation
General anesthetic Anesthetic that causes complete loss of consciousness
Local anesthetic Anesthetic that doesn't affect consciousness
Regional anesthetic Anesthetic that is injected into a nerve causing loss of sensation over a particular area
Topical anesthetic Local anesthetic applied to the surface of the arean to be anesthetized
Fracture Bone break
Atrophy Underdevelopment, decrease, or loss of muscle tissue
