Acute It just started recently or is a sharp, severe symptom
Chronic It has been going on for awhile now, long-term, persistent
Exacerbation It is getting worse
Abrupt All of a sudden
Febrile To have a fever
Afebrile To not have a fever
Malaise Not feeling well
Noncontributory Not related to this specific problem
Lethargic A decrease in level of consciousness; in a medical record, this is generally an indication that the patient is really sick
Marked It really stands out
Auscultation To listen
Alopecia Hair loss; balding
Palpation To feel, examination with fingers or hands
Percussion To hit something and listen to the resulting sound or feel the resulting vibration; drums are a percussion instrument
Unremarkable Another way of saying normal
Supine Laying on back, face is up
Prone Laying on stomach, face down
Diagnosis What the health care professional thinks the patient has
Idiopathic No known specific cause; it just happens
Localized Stays in a certain part of the body
Prognosis The chances for things getting better or worse
Lesion Diseased tissue or damaged tissue
Pathogen The organism that causes the problem
Morbidity The risk of being sick
Mortality The risk for dying, death rate
Proximal Closer in to the center; situated nearest the center of the body
Distal Farther away from the center; situated away from the center of the body
Lateral Out to the side; away from the midline of the body or towards the side
Medial Towards the middle or center of body
Dorsal/Posterior The back portion of the body
Anterior, ventral, antral, anatomical The front side of the body
Superior Above
Inferior Below
Contralateral Opposite side
Ipsilateral Same side
Unilateral One side
Bilateral Both sides
Dorsum The top of the hand or foot
Plantar The sole of the foot
Transverse Divides the body from top to bottom
Coronal Divides the body along a hypothetical plane from front to back; vertical plane dividing the body into anterior and posterior portions
Sagittal Divides the body along a hypothetical/vertical plane from right to left
Abrasion Scraping away of skin
Pruritus An itch; itch sensation
Seborrhea Discharge of oil (sebum)
Macule, Macula A small flat discolored area or freckle
Macula Yellowish area in the center of the retina at the back of the eye
Fissure Crack in the skin
Teratology/Teratogenic Birth defects
Endometrium Inner layer of uterine tissue
Fertilization The process of an egg and sperm joining to conceive a child
